THE TYR Swim Meet of Champions ended on a paradigm-shifting note as the oldest world record on the books finally succumbed to the relentless chase given by Kate Ziegler over the past year.<\/p>\n<p>Ziegler clocked an amazing 15:42.54 in the women&#39;s 1500 freestyle to eclipse the 15:52.10 set by Janet Evans on March 26, 1988 in Orlando, Fla.<\/p>\n<p>For a more thorough analysis of Ziegler&#39;s performance along with analysis on the impact of such an effort, please <a href=http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/lane9\/news\/14962.asp>click here<\/a> for SwimmingWorldMagazine.com&#39;s report. <\/p>\n<p>As for other medalists in the distance event, Joni Zimmerman of Tucson Ford had the best view in the house with a second-place time of 16:54.60, while Lynette Lim, 15, of the Piranhas walked with a third-place effort of 17:08.63.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 100 butterfly<\/b><br \/>\nRachel Komisarz of Lakeside broke through with an individual title in 59.98 as she held off Caitlin Andrew of Sun Devil Aquatics (1:01.12) and Antje Buschschulte of Germany (1:01.58).<\/p>\n<p>In the international field, Natalie Wiegersma of New Zealand wound up sixth in 1:03.27.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 100 butterfly<\/b><br \/>\nTucson Ford&#39;s Lyndon Ferns led a 1-2-3 effort for his club when he dropped his meet record with a time of 53.57.  That swim surpassed the 53.75 set by Ferns in 2005.<\/p>\n<p>Albert Subirats placed second in 54.48, while Masayuki Kishida took third in 54.61 to give Tucson Ford the medal sweep.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 100 backstroke<\/b><br \/>\nMinnesota&#39;s Roxane Akradi touched out Tucson Ford&#39;s Anna Turner, 1:04.16 to 1:04.47, to win the women&#39;s 100 back event.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Erin Volcan of the Aquazots took third in 1:05.42.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 100 backstroke<\/b><br \/>\nStanford&#39;s Peter Marshall rolled through the competition with a time of 55.96 in the men&#39;s two-lap back.  <\/p>\n<p>Minnesota&#39;s David Plummer finished second in 57.80, while Sun Devil Aquatics&#39; Nick Brunelli grabbed third in 58.15 in his comeback bid after shoulder surgery.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 100 breaststroke<\/b><br \/>\nJust like in the 200, Trojan Swim Club&#39;s Rebecca Soni knocked off teammate Keri Hehn.  This time, she clocked a meet and pool record time of 1:08.80 to eclipse the 1:09.13 set by Masami Tanaka in 2000.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Hehn touched in 1:09.48, while Tucson Ford&#39;s Annie Chandler locked down third in 1:10.31.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 100 breaststroke<\/b><br \/>\nSanta Clara&#39;s Matt Smith clocked a 1:04.45 to win the men&#39;s 100 breast, while Tucson Ford&#39;s Ivan Barnes wound up second in 1:05.03.  John Criste pocketed third in 1:05.30.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 200 IM<\/b><br \/>\nNatalie Wiegersma walked away with the women&#39;s medley event in 2:17.71.  Meanwhile, Lyndsay Paul of the Aquazots took second in 2:19.08, while Rebecca Soni of Trojan Swim Club finished third in 2:19.47.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 200 IM<\/b><br \/>\nRobert Margalis of St. Petersburg won a hotly-contested men&#39;s 200 IM with a time of 2:05.28 over second-place finisher Miguel Molina (Trojan Swim club), who touched in 2:05.46.<\/p>\n<p>John Dorr closed out the top three in 2:06.48.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 1500 freestyle<\/b><br \/>\nChad La Tourette of Mission Viejo topped the men&#39;s distance event in 15:21.42, while Tom Koucheravy took second in 15:28.56.  JK Koehler of Indiana University wrapped up third in 15:41.46, while Larsen Jensen elected not to swim the event.<\/p>\n<p><b>Relays<\/b><br \/>\nNew Zealand&#39;s women&#39;s team of Jessie Blundell, Annabelle Carey, Natalie Wiegersma and Penelope Marshall won the women&#39;s 400 medley in 4:26.14, while Minnesota&#39;s quartet of David Plummer, Mark Solfelt, Matthew Engle and Erich Welton took home the men&#39;s title in 4:00.44.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MISSION VIEJO, California, June 17.
