KATE Ziegler notched another meet record during the third day of long course meter competition at the TYR Swim Meet of Champions held in Mission Viejo, Calif., from June 14-17.  This time, she clocked a 1:58.50 in the women&#39;s 200 free for another meet and pool standard.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Rebecca Soni clocked a 2:27.10 in the women&#39;s 200 breast and Germany&#39;s Britta Steffen touched in 25.89 in the women&#39;s 50 free to account for the other two meet standards set on the day.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 200 freestyle<\/b><br \/>\nKate Ziegler of The Fish continued her remarkable meet with another meet and pool standard.  This time she clocked a 1:58.80 to hack two seconds off Maki Mika&#39;s time of 2:00.25 set in 2000.  Ziegler&#39;s in-season time sat just two seconds shy of Natalie Coughlin&#39;s American record of 1:56.43, and demonstrates her desired evolution into a relay contender.<\/p>\n<p>Germany&#39;s Meike Freitag claimed a distant silver in 2:02.46, while Rachel Komisarz of Lakeside touched just behind for bronze in 2:02.47.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 200 freestyle<\/b><br \/>\nGermany&#39;s Paul Biedermann finished just off the meet record with a winning time of 1:49.90.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Robert Margalis of St. Petersburg took silver in 1:51.94, while Tucson Ford&#39;s Adam Ritter earned bronze in 1:51.95.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 200 breaststroke<\/b><br \/>\nTrojan Swim Club swept the top two spots as Rebecca Soni shot down Amanda Beard&#39;s meet and pool record with a time of 2:27.10 for the win.  Beard had held the standards with a 2:27.57 set in 2004.<\/p>\n<p>Soni&#39;s teammate Keri Hehn took second in 2:27.88, while North Coast&#39;s Jessie Schmitt, 16, placed third in 2:33.77.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 200 breaststroke<\/b><br \/>\nJohn Criste picked up the men&#39;s 200 breaststroke title in 2:18.38, while Matt Smith of Santa Clara took second in 2:19.15.  Sean Mahoney of the Terrapins wrapped up third place in 2:19.88.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 50 freestyle<\/b><br \/>\nGermany dominated the women&#39;s splash-and-dash with a 1-2-3-5 effort.  Britta Steffen touched in a meet-record time of 25.89 to win and surpass the 25.90 set by Jenny Thompson in 1997.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Petra Dallmann (26.18), Antje Buschschulte (26.25) and Daniela Schreiber (26.45) finished second, third and fifth, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica Hardy of the Trojan Swim Club finished fourth in 26.41 to stop a top-four sweep by the German contingent.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 50 freestyle<\/b><br \/>\nNick Brunelli of Sun Devil Aquatics touched out Gabe Woodward of Bakersfield, 22.70 to 22.79 to claim the men&#39;s 50 free title.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Tucson Ford&#39;s duo of Roland Schoeman (22.94) and Lyndon Ferns (22.97) grabbed third and fourth, respectively.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 400 IM<\/b><br \/>\nLyndsay DePaul walked away with a comfortable victory in the women&#39;s long-distance medley when she touched in 4:52.28.  14-year-old Noelle Tarazona of Claremont and Tucson Ford&#39;s Jenny Forster provided the fireworks in the race as the battle for second came down to the touch. Tarazona placed second in 4:55.65, while Forster wound up third in 4:55.69.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 400 IM<\/b><br \/>\nRobert Margalis of St. Petersburg won the men&#39;s 400 IM going away with a time of 4:22.48.<\/p>\n<p>16-year-old Charlie Rimkus of Mission Viejo touched out Alex Wold of Minnesota in another intense battle for second place that came down to the slimmest of margins.  Rimkus touched in 4:31.45, while Wold clocked a third-place 4:31.46.  Russell Payne was also in the mix with a fourth-place 4:31.50.<\/p>\n<p><b>Relays<\/b><br \/>\nTucson Ford swept its second night of relays, this time in the 800 freestyle.<\/p>\n<p>Anna Turner, Leone Vorster, Whitney Myers and Lacey Nymeyer clocked an 8:26.69 to win the women&#39;s event, while Jean Basson, Nicolas Oliveira, Albert Subirats and Adam Ritter touched in 7:36.59 to win the men&#39;s distance relay.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MISSION VIEJO, California, June 16.
