{"id":149522,"date":"2015-08-09T11:46:05","date_gmt":"2015-08-09T18:46:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=149522"},"modified":"2015-08-09T12:04:35","modified_gmt":"2015-08-09T19:04:35","slug":"sun-yang-swimmer-of-meet-award-twitter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/sun-yang-swimmer-of-meet-award-twitter\/","title":{"rendered":"Sun Yang&#8217;s Swimmer of Meet Award Draws Outrage On Twitter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As if his <a href=http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/sun-yang-answers-questions-about-1500-free-withdrawal\/ target=_blank>withdrawal from the 1500 free final<\/a> wasn&#8217;t controversial enough, awarding <strong>Sun Yang<\/strong> the Male Swimmer of the Meet by FINA was the last straw for many, and they took to social media to vent their anger and frustration.<\/p>\n<p>Much of the outrage appears to come from Great Britain, where notable names such as Olympic champion <strong>Rebecca Adlington<\/strong> wondered why compatriot <strong>Adam Peaty<\/strong> was not given the trophy. Peaty won three gold medals (50 and 100 breast, 400 mixed medley relay) and set a world record in the 50 breaststroke.<\/p>\n<p>Some brought up Sun&#8217;s three-month doping ban last year as another reason why Sun did not deserve the award. Sun&#8217;s ban was for an illegal substance in heart medication he had been taking, though he said in a press conference today that he had no previous heart issues.<\/p>\n<p>Among male swimmers, Peaty&#8217;s two individual gold medals was matched by Sun (400 and 800 free), <strong>Florent Manaudou<\/strong> (50 fly and 50 free) and <strong>Mitch Larkin<\/strong> (100 and 200 back). With the award based on points, Sun&#8217;s silver medal in the 200 freestyle was likely the deciding factor. On the women&#8217;s side, giving the trophy to <strong>Katie Ledecky<\/strong> was a no-brainer, with two world records and five gold medals.<\/p>\n<p>Sun won the Male Swimmer of the Meet trophy in 2013 after winning the 400, 800 and 1500 freestyles.
