MANCHESTER, England, June 16. DAY two of competition at the British Masters Championships and Senior Age Group Championships saw four European records broken in the pool.<\/p>\n
Trafford swimmer Jill Jones, who competes in the 50-54 age group, claimed two European and two British records in the 200m butterfly and the 200m freestyle. She completed her heat of the 200m butterfly in a time of 2:48.87 seconds. In the freestyle she smashed the European record by two seconds with a new time of 2:24.99 seconds.<\/p>\n
"It is fantastic to break records," said Jones. "I really am thrilled. After breaking the British record earlier in the year I was hoping to claim the European in the butterfly today. But it was a real surprise to have claimed the record in the freestyle. I really didn't expect to swim that fast today. I am competing in more events over the weekend so I will be looking to build on my performance."<\/p>\n
Veteran Willy Van Rysel (Spencer Swim Team) competed in the 90-94 age group and showed her strength in the pool by gaining a new European and British record in the 50m freestyle event. She competed in five events throughout day two of the competition including the 400m and 800m freestyle events.<\/p>\n
"I was only expecting to get points and not to break records today," she said. "I am really pleased to have gained a European record in my first swim. I think I have performed ok today.<\/p>\n
"I was very happy with my first swim but I just didn't push myself in my other events today. I have competed in five events and it has been tough and to have claimed a new European and British record is a good achievement."<\/p>\n
Simon Veale (Totnes SC) broke the European and British record in the 200m freestyle with a time of 2:08.84. He continued to show his form from yesterday when he claimed a new British record.<\/p>\n
"I really enjoyed that swim," said Veale. "It felt better than yesterday and I am pleased to have claimed that record. I came here looking for those records so I am happy. I am competing in more events tomorrow so I will be looking to carry on my success."<\/p>\n
In the 200m medley relay Trafford proved dominate in the 200-239 age group to claim a European and British record in a time of 2:09.58.<\/p>\n
The men's 50m freestyle event saw two British records claimed in the pool. Ealing's Charles Turner swam a time of 23.52 to claim his record in the 20-24 age group.<\/p>\n
"I am happy with my swim," said Turner. "My performance was better than I thought it would be today, I swam much faster than expected. I am trying to get race fit for the nationals in July, I am looking forward to competing there."<\/p>\n
In the 45-49 age group, James Morris of City of Chester took his British record in 25.88 seconds.<\/p>\n
"That was a great result for me," he said. "It was quicker than expected but I felt good. I will be looking for an even stronger performance in the 100m freestyle tomorrow."<\/p>\n
Four European, and nine British records were claimed on day two of competition.<\/p>\n
