MISSION VIEJO, California, June 15. KATE Ziegler continued on her hunt of Janet Evans' records at the TYR Swim Meet of Champions held in Mission Viejo, Calif., from June 14-17. This time, Ziegler shot down Evans' meet and pool record in the 400 free with a time of 4:05.44 for her second victory in as many nights.<\/p>\n
Not to be outdone, Germany's Britta Steffen also lodged a meet record with a time of 56.25 in the 100 freestyle.<\/p>\n
Women's 100 freestyle<\/b>
\nWorld record holder Britta Steffen of Germany led an action-packed two-lap freestyle race when she nipped the meet record of 56.27 with a time of 56.25. <\/p>\n
Meanwhile, a pair of Germans and an American each dead-heated at 56.72 for second place efforts as Meike Freitag, Antje Buschschulte and Lacey Nymeyer all touched with identical times.<\/p>\n
Kate Ziegler, swimming for The Fish, came in fifth with a time of 56.76 after leading prelims with a 56.60.<\/p>\n
Also, Germany's Petra Dallmann dropped the hammer in the consolation final with a 56.28, which would have given her second in finals.<\/p>\n
Men's 100 freestyle<\/b>
\nJason Lezak scared his meet record of 49.74 with a winning effort of 49.90 as the lone sub-50 swimmer in the heat.<\/p>\n
Nick Brunelli of Sun Devil Aquatics hit the wall in 50.26, while Lyndon Ferns of Tucson Ford Aquatics clocked a third-place 50.59.<\/p>\n
Notably, Roland Schoeman, also of Tucson Ford, took sixth in 51.25.<\/p>\n
Women's 200 butterfly<\/b>
\n17-year-old Tanya Krisman of North Coast Aquatics won the women's 200 fly in 2:13.54, while Lyndsay DePaul claimed second in 2:14.40.<\/p>\n
Courtney Eads of Claremont rounded out the podium in 2:14.87.<\/p>\n
Men's 200 butterfly<\/b>
\nEddie Erazo of the Aquazots went sub-2:00 with a time of 1:59.91 to outlast the rest of the field.<\/p>\n
Tamas Kerekjarto of Trojan Swim Club wound up second in 2:01.53, while Juan Veloz of Tucson Ford touched right behind with a third-place 2:01.70.<\/p>\n
Women's 200 backstroke<\/b>
\nContinuing the international flavor of the meet, 17-year-old Penelope Marshall of New Zealand held off both Caitlin Iversen and Kathryn Thompson of Tucson Ford with a first-place time of 2:18.04.<\/p>\n
Iverson earned second-place honors with a 2:18.24, while Thompson placed third in 2:18.68. <\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Julianne McLane of the Terrapins and Sachiko Yamada of Mission Viejo tied for fourth with matching 2:18.92s.<\/p>\n
Notably, Erin Volcan of the Aquazots clocked the fastest time of finals with a 2:16.86 after finishing outside the top eight during prelims.<\/p>\n
Men's 200 backstroke<\/b>
\nComing off a tough week of training and competition at the National Club Swimming Association's All-American meet in Hawaii, Cory Chitwood of the Northern Kentucky Clippers had enough in the tank to hold off a talented field. Chitwood stopped the clock in 2:03.41 to emerge victorious.<\/p>\n
New Zealand's Kurt Bassett wound up in second with a time of 2:03.64, while St. Petersburg's Robert Margalis took third in 2:04.24.<\/p>\n
Women's 400 freestyle<\/b>
\nKate Ziegler obliterated another meet and pool record, this time taking down a 19-year-old Janet Evans' standard as she continues to stalk the Evans trail. She notched a 4:05.44 to eclipse the 4:09.46 set by Evans in 1988.<\/p>\n
Christine Jennings of Minnesota provided a distant second-place time of 4:15.91, while Rachel Komisarz of Lakeside took third in 4:17.59.<\/p>\n
Men's 400 freestyle<\/b>
\nGermany's Paul Biedermann garnered the victory in the men's middle distance event when he touched in 3:53.11.<\/p>\n
Robert Margalis of St. Petersburg finished more than a second behind in 3:54.96, while Chad La Tourette of Mission Viejo placed third in 3:56.28.<\/p>\n
Last night's 800 free winner, Tom Koucheravy took fourth in 3:58.51.<\/p>\n
Relays<\/b>
\nTucson Ford Aquatics swept the men's and women's 400 freestyle relay events.<\/p>\n
