CHARLOTTE, North Carolina, June 10. ALREADY the winner of the 100 and 200 breaststroke events, Caitlin Leverenz added another victory on Sunday night, the final evening of the Charlotte UltraSwim at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center. Leverenz picked up her latest decision in the 200 individual medley, thanks to a swim of 2:13.80.<\/p>\n
Leverenz, a 16-year-old rising star, earned a one-plus second triumph over Ava Ohlgren, who earlier in the meet won the 200 freestyle and 400 individual medley. Ohlgren was timed in 2:14.95 and was followed in third place by Emily Kukors (2:16.55). Among the men, Bradley Ally won the 200 I.M. in 2:03.76, fast enough to hold off Canada's Keith Beavers (2:04.27).<\/p>\n
Another rising talent, Teresa Crippen defeated the competition in the 200 backstroke as she handled the event in 2:14.11, comfortably ahead of the 2:14.84 of Kelly Harrigan. Meanwhile, the men's version of the event was won by Doug Van Wie, an Auburn product, in 2:02.34. He was followed by Penn State's Patrick Schirk in 2:02.53.<\/p>\n
Veterans took first-place finishes in the 100 freestyle, with Amanda Weir and Ryk Neethling placing on top. Weir, the former American-record holder in the event, went 56.13 to beat Kara Denby (56.43). As for Neethling, the South African won in 50.72. In the distance events, Whitney Sprague was the top finisher in the women's 1500 freestyle, as she negotiated the distance in 16:35.82.
