THERE'S no doubt that the highlight race on the second day of the Charlotte UltraSwim was the men's 50-meter freestyle, which featured Cullen Jones and Gary Hall Jr. But, when the championship final was over Saturday at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center, another athlete owned the gold medal.<\/p>\n
The reigning NCAA champion in the 50 and 100 freestyles for Auburn, Brazil's Cesar Cielo took first place, registering a mark of 22.49. Cielo was followed by Auburn product George Bovell (22.72) with Hall, a three-time Olympian, checking in third in 22.77. Jones, who was ranked No. 1 in the world last year and earned the silver medal in the 50 free at the World Championships in March, was fourth in 22.92.<\/p>\n
On the female side, Amanda Weir was the winner of the 50 free behind a mark of 25.74, considerably faster than the 26.07 of Kara Denby and the 26.22 of Maritza Correia. In the 200 butterfly races, Kristen Hastrup and Jeremy Knowles were the winners. Hastrup covered her race in 2:13.50, just ahead of the 2:13.68 of Teresa Crippen, who is gearing up for this summer's Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro. Mary DeScenza was third in 2:14.97. Knowles, meanwhile, went 2:00.25 and was followed in second by Ricky Berens (2:02.26).<\/p>\n
The winner of the 100 breaststroke on Friday night, Caitlin Leverenz added the 200 breast title to her collection when she went 2:27.56 to easily best Kaitlin O'Brien (2:33.49). Like Leverenz, Mark Gangloff completed a double in the breaststroke, winning the 200 distance in 2:16.10, faster than the 2:16.57 of Ryan Hurley. Other winners were Jacque Fessel (1:02.67) and James Wike (55.30) in the 100 backstroke events and Maggie Bird (4:15.25) and David Walters (3:56.74) in the 400 freestyle.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
