Women’s 100 free<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom<\/strong> and Australia’s Cate Campbell<\/strong> tied for the top seed in the women’s 100-meter free prelims at the 2015 FINA World Championships.<\/p>\n

Sjostrom and Campbell both hit the wall in 53.22s. \u00a0Campbell is tied with Femke Heemskerk<\/strong> for the top-ranked times in the world as they share 52.69s. \u00a0Sjostrom is a close third with a 52.97 – the only other sub-53 of the year.<\/p>\n

Australia’s Bronte Campbell<\/strong> qualified third today in 53.50, off her fourth-ranked 53.04 from this year as well.<\/p>\n

The Netherlands’ Ranomi Kromowidjojo<\/strong> (53.85) and Heemskerk (53.89) qualified fourth and fifth, while China’s Shen Duo<\/strong> posted a sixth-seeded 53.93.<\/p>\n

USA’s Simone Manuel<\/strong> rounded out the sub-54s with a seventh-seeded time of 53.99.<\/p>\n

France’s Charlotte Bonnet<\/strong> (54.01), Sweden’s Michelle Coleman<\/strong> (54.10), USA’s Missy Franklin<\/strong> (54.22) and Japan’s Miki Uchida<\/strong> (54.22) are among the top 11 to make the semis.<\/p>\n

China’s Zhu Menghui<\/strong> (54.41), Canada’s Chantal Van Landeghem<\/strong> (54.54), Russia’s Natalia Lovtcova<\/strong> (54.68) and Denmark’s Pernille Blume<\/strong> (54.72) rounded out the top 15.<\/p>\n

Russia’s Veronika Popova<\/strong> and Belarus’ Aliaksandra Herasimenia<\/strong> set up a 16th-place swimoff with matching 54.90s.<\/p>\n

Men’s 200 back<\/strong><\/p>\n

Australia’s Mitch Larkin<\/strong> clinched the top seed in the men’s 200-meter back prelims at the 2015 FINA World Championships.<\/p>\n

Larkin clocked the only 1:55 of the day with a 1:55.88. That’s a bit off his second-ranked time fo 1:55.52.<\/p>\n

Japan’s Ryosuke Irie<\/strong>, the top-ranked swimmer in the world with a 1:54.62 from January, qualified second in the event with a 1:56.68.<\/p>\n

USA’s Ryan Murphy<\/strong>, a definite rising star for the American, qualified third in 1:56.71 to move just outside the top 10 in the world rankings.<\/p>\n

Russia’s Evgeny Rylov<\/strong> (1:56.78), China’s Xu Jiayu<\/strong> (1:56.90) and USA’s Tyler Clary<\/strong> (1:56.92) also posted 1:56s to rounded out the top six.<\/p>\n

Germany’s Christian Diener<\/strong> (1:57.42), Australia’s Josh Beavers<\/strong> (1:57.62), Japan’s Masaki Kaneko<\/strong> (1:57.63), Brazil’s Leonardo De Deus<\/strong> (1:57.73) and Russia’s Grigory Tarasevich<\/strong> (1:57.77) qualified seventh through 11th in the 1:57 range.<\/p>\n

China’s Li Guangyuan<\/strong> (1:58.02), Poland’s Radoslaw Kawecki<\/strong> (1:58.09), New Zealand’s Corey Main<\/strong> (1:58.22), Italy’s Luca Mencarini<\/strong> (1:58.31) and Hungary’s Gabor Balog<\/strong> (1:58.55) also earned spots in the semifinal heats.<\/p>\n

Women’s 200 breast<\/strong><\/p>\n

Japan’s Kanako Watanabe<\/strong> turned in the top seed in the women’s 200-meter breast prelims at the 2015 FINA World Championships.<\/p>\n

Watanabe, the top-ranked swimmer in the world with a 2:20.90 from Japanese Nationals, cruised to the top seed in a time of 2:23.29.<\/p>\n

The most stunning storyline, however, proved to be Russian favorite Yuliya Efimova<\/strong>, the 2013 gold medal winner, missing semis completely with a 17th-place time of 2:26.11.<\/p>\n

Efimova, who won the 100 breast already this week<\/a>, touched four seconds back of her fifth-seeded season best of 2:22.12 from Russian Nationals. She is one of a few swimmers who have played with fire in not putting up a fast enough swim in prelims to lock down a semifinal berth.<\/p>\n

USA’s Micah Lawrence<\/strong> qualified second in 2:23.32 to move to eighth in the world rankings. \u00a0Iceland’s Hilda Luthersdottir<\/strong> earned the third seed in 2:23.54.<\/p>\n

Belgium’s Fanny Lecluyse<\/strong> (2:23.77), Turkey’s Viktoria Gunes<\/strong> (2:23.81), Denmark’s Rikke Moller Pedersen<\/strong> (2:23.90), Spain’s Jessica Vall<\/strong> (2:23.97) and Russia’s Vitalina Simonova<\/strong> (2:23.99) also cleared 2:24 to round out the top eight.<\/p>\n

Australia’s Taylor McKeown<\/strong> (2:24.02), China’s Shi Jinglin<\/strong> (2:24.09), Canada’s Kierra Smith<\/strong> (2:24.12), Australia’s Tessa Wallace<\/strong> (2:24.88), Spain’s Marina Garcia<\/strong> (2:25.32), Germany’s Vanessa Grimberg<\/strong> (2:25.74), Japan’s Rie Kaneto<\/strong> (2:25.75) and Finland’s Jenna Laukkanen<\/strong> (2:25.91) closed out the rest of the semifinal heats.<\/p>\n

USA’s Breeja Larson<\/strong> joined Efimova outside the top 16 with a 19th-place 2:26.38.<\/p>\n

Men’s 200 breast<\/strong><\/p>\n

Marco Koch<\/strong> led a handful of swimmers under 2:10 in the men’s 200-meter breast prelims at the 2015 FINA World Championships.<\/p>\n

Koch clocked a top time of 2:09.12, just a bit off his third-ranked time of 2:08.57.<\/p>\n

In a truly shocking occurrence, following in line with Yuliya Efimova<\/strong> missing the women’s 200-meter breast semis, Great Britain’s Adam Peaty<\/strong> finished 26th overall in 2:13.24. \u00a0He entered the day ranked second in the world with a 2:08.34 and was unable to summon that type of speed this morning.<\/p>\n

Great Britain’s Andrew Willis<\/strong> claimed the second seed in 2:09.35, just off his fifth-ranked 2:08.59, while China’s Mao Feilian<\/strong> picked up third in 2:09.56.<\/p>\n

Kazakhstan’s Dmitriy Balandin<\/strong> qualified fourth in 2:09.75, while three-time defending champion Daniel Gyurta<\/strong> made his way into semis with a 2:09.81.<\/p>\n

Finland’s Matti Mattsson<\/strong> (2:09.89), USA’s Kevin Cordes<\/strong> (2:09.94) and Russia’s Anton Chupkov<\/strong> (2:09.97) also broke 2:10 to make the top eight.<\/p>\n

Russia’s Ilya Khomenko<\/strong> (2:10.13), Iceland’s Anton McKee<\/strong> (2:10.21), Sweden’s Erik Persson<\/strong> (2:10.51), USA’s Nic Fink<\/strong> (2:10.43), Japan’s Yasuhiro Koseki<\/strong> (2:10.47), Germany’s Christian Vom Lehn<\/strong> (2:10.71), Italy’s Luca Pizzini<\/strong> (2:11.00) and Lithuania’s Giedrius Titenis<\/strong> (2:11.11) rounded out the semifinal heats.<\/p>\n

Cameron van der Burgh<\/strong> (21st\/2:12.37) and Glenn Snyders<\/strong> (23rd\/2:12.71) were among other big names like Peaty to miss semis.<\/p>\n

Women’s 800 free relay<\/strong><\/p>\n

Federica Pellegrini<\/strong> led Italy to the top seed in the women’s 800-meter free relay at the 2015 FINA World Championships.<\/p>\n

Pellegrini posted a 1:56.60 anchor as Alice Mizzau<\/strong> (1:58.78), Erica Musso<\/strong> (1:58.05), Chiara Masini Luccetti<\/strong> (1:59.08) and Pellegrini posted a 7:52.51 for the top seed heading into finals.<\/p>\n

USA’s Leah Smith<\/strong> (1:57.52), Cierra Runge<\/strong> (1:58.65), Chelsea Chenault<\/strong> (1:58.04) and Shannon Vreeland<\/strong> (1:58.40) qualified second in 7:52.61.<\/p>\n

Australia’s Bronte Barratt<\/strong> (1:57.67), Jessica Ashwood<\/strong> (1:58.98), Leah Neale<\/strong> (1:57.69) and Emma McKeon<\/strong> (1:58.32) snared third for the Aussies in 7:52.66.<\/p>\n

Sarah Sjostrom<\/strong> blasted the anchor leg for Sweden with a 1:55.69. \u00a0Louise Hansson<\/strong> (1:58.45), Michelle Coleman<\/strong> (1:58.18), Stina Gardell<\/strong> (2:01.25) and Sjostrom grabbed fourth in 7:53.57.<\/p>\n

China (7:54.31), Japan (7:54.58), Great Britain (7:54.99) and France (7:55.08) also made finals, while Russia continued its tough morning of qualifying by missing finals with a ninth-place 7:55.19.<\/p>\n
