Women’s 100 back<\/strong><\/p>\n

Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu<\/strong> continued to be on fire at the 2015 FINA World Championships with a Hungarian record in the women’s 100-meter back prelims in Kazan.<\/p>\n

Just a day after twice lowering the textile best in the women’s 200-meter IM<\/a>, Hosszu clocked a world-best 58.78.<\/p>\n

That swim not only beat Emily Seebohm’s<\/strong> 58.89 from the BHP Super Series as the top time this year, it broke Hosszu’s national record of 59.36 as she cleared 59 seconds for the first time.<\/p>\n

The performance also moved Hosszu up to seventh all time in the event’s history.<\/p>\n

Hosszu, however, elected to scratch the event to focus on the women’s 200-meter IM finals.<\/p>\n

Seebohm nearly joined Hosszu under 59 seconds in prelims with a 59.04 to qualify second. \u00a0Her teammate Madison Wilson<\/strong>, already under 59 this year with a 58.94 from Australian Nationals, qualified third in 59.17.<\/p>\n

Denmark’s Mie Nielsen<\/strong> swam alongside Hosszu to the fourth seed with a 59.40, while USA’s Missy Franklin<\/strong> overcame a bad start to qualify fifth in 59.59.<\/p>\n

Russia’s Anastasia Fesikova<\/strong> also cleared 1:00 with a sixth-seeded 59.84.<\/p>\n

Great Britain’s Lauren Quigley<\/strong> (1:00.14), Zimbabwe’s Kirsty Coventry<\/strong> (1:00.14), Iceland’s Eyglo Gustafsdottir<\/strong> (1:00.25) and Brazil’s Etiene Medeiros<\/strong> (1:00.33) closed out the top 10.<\/p>\n

Great Britain’s Elizabeth Simmonds<\/strong> (1:00.38), Sweden’s Michelle Coleman<\/strong> (1:00.55), China’s Fu Yuanhui<\/strong> (1:00.55), China’s Chen Jie<\/strong> (1:00.58), Poland’s Alicja Tchorz<\/strong> (1:00.61) and Canada’s Dominique Bouchard<\/strong> (1:00.61) will also move on to the semifinals.<\/p>\n

USA’s Kathleen Baker<\/strong> went out have in 28.53, the fastest of the field, but paid for it as she settled for 17th in 1:00.62. \u00a0Hosszu’s later scratch pulled her into semis.<\/p>\n

Men’s 100 back<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mitchell Larkin<\/strong> of Australia moved into the top 10 all time in the men’s 100-meter back with an Oceania record at the 2015 FINA World Championships.<\/p>\n

Larkin raced his way to a sizzling time of 52.50. \u00a0That swim blasted the previous world best from this year of 52.88 from Chris Walker-Hebborn at the British Nationals. \u00a0It also moved Larkin to 10th all time in the event’s history.<\/p>\n

USA’s Matt Grevers<\/strong> cruised through the final heat to qualify second overall in 53.21, while China’s Xu Jiayu<\/strong> qualified third in 53.29.<\/p>\n

Great Britain’s Liam Tancock<\/strong> (53.35) and Japan’s Ryosuke Irie<\/strong> (53.37) comprised the rest of the top five.<\/p>\n

Brazil’s Guilherme Guido<\/strong> (53.57), Great Britain’s Chris Walker-Hebborn<\/strong> (53.64), Russia’s Grigory Tarasevich<\/strong> (53.69), Russia’s Evgeny Rylov<\/strong> (53.74) and Germany’s Jan-Philip Glania<\/strong> (53.78) also made the top 10.<\/p>\n

Italy’s Simone Sabbioni<\/strong> (53.83), France’s Jeremy Stravius<\/strong> (53.92), France’s Camille Lacourt<\/strong> (53.92), Israel’s Yakov Toumarkin<\/strong> (53.92), Australia’s Ben Treffers<\/strong> (54.00) and USA’s David Plummer<\/strong> (54.06) will also move on to the semis.<\/p>\n

Women’s 100 breast<\/strong><\/p>\n

Russia’s Yuliya Efimova<\/strong> led a handful of 1:06s into the semifinals of the women’s 100-meter breast at the 2015 FINA World Championships.<\/p>\n

Efimova put up the top time of the morning with a 1:06.31, well off her third-ranked time of 1:05.89 from the Mission Viejo Invitational in her first swim back from an anti-doping ban<\/a>.<\/p>\n

China’s Shi Jinglin<\/strong> qualified second in 1:06.45 to move into a fourth-place tie with Kanako Watanabe<\/strong> in the world rankings.<\/p>\n

USA’s Jessica Hardy<\/strong> put up a 1:06.68 for the third seed to move to seventh in the world, while world-leader Ruta Meilutyte<\/strong> of Lithuania earned the fourth seed with an easy speed 1:06.75. \u00a0She leads the rankings this year with a 1:05.46 from the Canet stop of the Mare Nostrum circuit.<\/p>\n

Meilutyte is looking to defend her 2013 championship, where she beat Efimova 1:04.42 to 1:05.02 for the win. \u00a0Hardy finished bronze that year as well with a 1:05.52.<\/p>\n

Watanabe (1:06.81), Iceland’s Hilda Luthersdottir<\/strong> (1:06.87) and Australia’s Taylor McKeown<\/strong> (1:06.97) also cleared 1:07 to make semis.<\/p>\n

Sweden’s Jennie Johannson<\/strong> (1:07.09), Jamaica’s Alia Atkinson<\/strong> (1:07.09), Spain’s Jessica Vall<\/strong> (1:07.13), Belgium’s Fanny Lecluyse<\/strong> (1:07.29), Australia’s Lorna Tonks<\/strong> (1:07.32), Denmark’s Rikke Moller Pedersen<\/strong> (1:07.39), Canada’s Rachel Nicol<\/strong> (1:07.52), Italy’s Arianna Castiglioni<\/strong> (1:07.52) and Finland’s Jenna Laukkanen<\/strong> (1:07.58) also claimed transfer spots into the semifinal heats.<\/p>\n

USA’s Micah Lawrence<\/strong> missed a second swim with a 19th-place 1:07.73.<\/p>\n

Men’s 200 free<\/strong><\/p>\n

The men’s 200-meter semifinals are loaded with some top names, paced by 400-meter free victor Sun Yang<\/strong> of China at the 2015 FINA World Championships.<\/p>\n

Sun, who won the 400-meter free last night<\/a>, put up a 1:46.00 this morning to earn the top seed. \u00a0That swim fell a bit short of his second-ranked 1:45.75 from Chinese Nationals.<\/p>\n

Great Britain’s James Guy<\/strong> put up a 1:46.10 to clear his seventh-ranked season best of 1:46.32 from British Nationals.<\/p>\n

Germany’s Paul Biedermann<\/strong>, the world best with a 1:45.60 from German Nationals, put up a 1:46.20 for the third seed.<\/p>\n

Australia’s Cameron McEvoy<\/strong>, ranked fourth in the world with a 1:45.94 from Australian Nationals, picked up the fourth seed in 1:46.39.<\/p>\n

Great Britain’s Calum Jarvis<\/strong> (1:46.61), Russia’s Danila Izotov<\/strong> (1:46.65), USA’s Conor Dwyer<\/strong> (1:46.73) and The Netherlands’ Sebastiaan Verschuren<\/strong> (1:46.88) closed out the top eight.<\/p>\n

Russia’s Aleksandr Krasnykh<\/strong> (1:46.91), Australia’s David McKeon<\/strong> (1:47.00), Serbia’s Velimir Stjepanovic<\/strong> (1:47.10), South Africa’s Chad le Clos<\/strong> (1:47.17), USA’s Ryan Lochte<\/strong> (1:47.18), Brazil’s Joao De Lucca<\/strong> (1:47.47), South Africa’s Myles Brown<\/strong> (1:47.48) and Argentina’s Federico Grabich<\/strong> (1:47.73) also will battle for finals spots in semis.<\/p>\n

Women’s 1500 free<\/strong><\/p>\n

The astonishing dominance of Katie Ledecky<\/strong> in the distance freestyle continued as she cut half-a-second off her world record in the women’s 1500-meter free during prelims at the 2015 FINA World Championships.<\/p>\n

Ledecky raced her way to a 15:27.71 this morning to break her own world record of 15:28.36 set at the 2014 Pan Pacific Championships.<\/p>\n

Her swim was so dominant that even her 800-meter free cut is historic. \u00a0She posted an 8:15.29 at the 800-meter mark, which ranks as eighth all time in the event’s history. \u00a0Only one swimmer has ever swum the 800-meter free naturally faster than Ledecky’s split, Rebecca Adlington<\/strong> with an 8:14.10 at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.<\/p>\n

Denmark’s Lotte Friis<\/strong> led the battle for the second seed with a 15:54.23 to rank second in the world, 26 seconds behind Ledecky. \u00a0Australia’s Jessica Ashwood<\/strong> posted a 15:56.52 to stand third in prelims and third in the world rankings as well.<\/p>\n

Chile’s Kristel Kobrich<\/strong> (16:01.63), New Zealand’s Lauren Boyle<\/strong> (16:02.84), Hungary’s Boglarka Kapas<\/strong> (16:06.25), The Netherlands’ Sharon van Rouwendaal<\/strong> (16:09.12) and Italy’s Aurora Ponsele<\/strong> (16:12.01) also made tomorrow night’s finale.<\/p>\n
