BRISBANE, Australia, May 19. THE Monaco style head-to-head showdowns highlighted the final morning of swimming at the Telstra Grand Prix held in Brisbane, Australia from May 18-20.<\/p>\n
Monaco Knockout Results<\/b>
\nThere was an exciting set of head-to-head battles on the final morning of competition. In the first event, Felicity Galvez of Chandler touched out Jessicah Schipper in the 50 fly, 26.85 to 26.87.<\/p>\n
In the women's 50 back, Sophie Edington of Kingscliff downed teammate Tay Zimmer, 28.69 to 28.95. Meanwhile, Leisel Jones of Commercial edged Sally Foster of Central Aquatic, 31.63 to 31.90, in the 50 breast. <\/p>\n
Youngster Cate Campbell, 15, of Indooroopilly earned a win over Jodie Henry of Chandler, 25.16 to 25.40 in the 50 free.<\/p>\n
Campbell's win not only was big from the standpoint of defeating an Olympian, it also came on her 15th birthday.<\/p>\n
"To swim a time just outside my personal-best time after I've been a bit sick this week and without a taper is pretty exciting," Campbell told Swimming Australia<\/i>. "The competition in the 50m is really hot and I still have a long way to go – but it's always a nice surprise when you do well."<\/p>\n
Andrew Lauterstein of Southport Olympic opened the men's showdowns with a 50 fly win over Kirk Palmer of Barker Aquatics, 24.62 to 24.82. Ashley Delaney of Nunawading beat Hayden Stoeckel of Kingscliff to the wall, 25.83 to 26.32 in the 50 back, while Christian Sprenger of Commercial eased by James Stacey of Barker Aquatics, 27.93 to 29.20, in the 50 breast.<\/p>\n
Eamon Sullivan of West Coast (22.55) won a triple threat dance with Jono Newton of Sydney University (22.68) and Ashley Callus of Southport Olympic (22.83) in the 50 free.<\/p>\n
Women's 100 freestyle<\/b>
\nCentral Aquatics' Sally Foster raced by Chandler's Jodie Henry and Mackay's Linda MacKenzie to win the 100 free in 56.09. Henry clocked a time of 56.14 for silver, while MacKenzie took bronze in 56.31.<\/p>\n
Men's 200 freestyle<\/b>
\nAndrew Mewing of Yeronga Park picked up the victory with a time of 1:49.73, while Kirk Palmer of Barker Aquatics took second in 1:50.40. Nick Ffrost of Southport Olympic rounded out the podium in 1:51.23.<\/p>\n
Men's 100 breaststroke<\/b>
\nChristian Sprenger of Commercial dominated the event with a time of 1:01.34, while Brenton Rickard of Brothers (1:03.65) and Robert McDonald of St. Peters Western (1:03.81) finished well behind him in second and third, respectively.<\/p>\n
Women's 400 IM<\/b>
\nJennifer Reilly of Rockingham won the 400 IM going away in 4:48.10. Lara Carroll of Fremantle Port earned silver in 4:52.68, while Ashleigh McCleery of Miami checked in with bronze in 4:52.83.<\/p>\n
Men's 100 butterfly<\/b>
\nRyan Pini of Papua New Guinea walked away triumphant with a gold-medal time of 53.54. Meanwhile, Andrea Lauterstein of Southport Olympic (53.88) and Moss Burmester of New Zealand (54.01) wound up in second and third, respectively.<\/p>\n
Women's 100 backstroke<\/b>
\nSophie Edington of Kingscliff slowed up from her prelim time of 1:01.86 with a 1:02.19, but it was enough to hold off second-place finisher Belinda Hocking. Hocking, of Albury, wound up second in 1:02.45, while Tay Zimmer of Kingscliff took third in 1:02.52.<\/p>\n
Women's 200 butterfly<\/b>
\nFelicity Galvez of Chandler notched a win with a time of 2:09.39, while Samantha Hamill, 16, of Quad Park placed second in 2:10.76. Jessicah Schipper of Redcliffe Leagues settled for third in 2:11.36.<\/p>\n
Men's 200 IM<\/b>
\nLeith Brodie of Albany Creek slashed six seconds off his prelim time for a commanding margin of victory when he tallied a 2:02.96 in the final heat. Travis Nederpelt of Perth placed second in 2:06.24, while Nick Cordner of Ivanhoe Neon finished third in 2:06.67.<\/p>\n
Women's 400 freestyle<\/b>
\nLinda MacKenzie of Mackay topped the field with a time of 4:12.97, while Albany Creek teammates Bronte Barratt (4:13.09) and Kylie Palmer (4:19.51) snared second and third, respectively.<\/p>\n
Women's 200 breaststroke<\/b>
\nSally Foster of Central Aquatic cruised to a win in 2:31.94, while Jade Edmistone of Commercial placed second in 2:34.95. Jennifer Reilly of Rockingham closed out the top three in 2:37.60.<\/p>\n
Men's 1500 freestyle<\/b>
\nRyan Cochrane of Canada destroyed the field in the distance free with a time of 15:11.90. Trent Grimsey of Albany Creek provided the closest competition with a time of 15:32.02, while Cameron Smith of St. Peters Western took third in 15:47.49.<\/p>\n
