IN the second day of short course yard swimming at the 2007 USMS Short Course National Championships held at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash., from May 17-20, competitors lit up the water with a bevy of beautiful efforts.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 100 butterfly<\/b><br \/>\nAfter a blistering first day in the men&#39;s events, the second day of competition started off without a national record.<\/p>\n<p>However, plenty of national titles were earned by the swimmers in attendance.  Devin Saez (18-24 \u2013 51.46), Erik Scalise (25-29 \u2013 49.40), Tyler Blessing (30-34 \u2013 51.69), Jeffrey Roddin (35-39 \u2013 52.19), Chris Stevenson (40-44 \u2013 51.52), Dennis Baker (45-49 \u2013 52.85), Kerry O&#39;Brien (50-54 \u2013 56.17), Fred Baird (55-59 \u2013 1:00.28), Rich Abrahams (60-64 \u2013 56.15), Cappy Sheely (65-69 \u2013 1:05.29), Dennis O&#39;Brien (70-74 \u2013 1:14.79), William Bond (75-79 \u2013 1:37.52), Warren Foster (80-84 \u2013 2:40.03) and Andrew Holden (85-89 \u2013 2:13.95) each came away with top-honor hardware.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 100 butterfly<\/b><br \/>\nThe women got on track in the 100 fly as a pair national records fell.  Laura Val (55-59) and Carolyn Boak (60-64) recorded national standards in their groupings.  Val clocked a 1:02.43 to demolish the previous standard of 1:08.01 set by Barbara Dunbar on March 21, 2004.  Meanwhile, Boak clocked a 1:13.06 to surpass the 1:15.31 set by Ardeth Mueller on April 10, 2005.<\/p>\n<p>Other national titlists included Kelly Busche (18-24 \u2013 57.58), Lyndsey Linke (25-29 \u2013 58.03), Jean Dillon (30-34 \u2013 1:03.43), Michelle Crow (35-39 \u2013 1:01.92), Susan von der Lippe (40-44 \u2013 56.08), Andrea Block (45-49 \u2013 1:01.24), Mary Lippold (50-54 \u2013 1:03.93), Margit Jebe (65-69 \u2013 1:35.25), Patricia Tullman (70-74 \u2013 1:47.33) and June Krauser (80-84 \u2013 2:51.02).<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 50 breaststroke<\/b><br \/>\nJeff Commings provided the third national record of the day with a time of 25.78 in the 30-34 division.  The effort nipped the 16-year-old record of 25.88 previously held by David Lundberg since May 19, 1991.<\/p>\n<p>Elliot Ptasnik (18-24 \u2013 26.46), Gary Marshall (25-29 \u2013 25.93), Roque Santos (35-39 \u2013 27.75), Richard Landry (40-44 \u2013 27.98), Jon Blank (45-49 \u2013 28.23), Jack Groselle (50-54 \u2013 28.74), Jim Capers (55-59 \u2013 30.45), Robert Strand (60-64 \u2013 30.02), Richard Todd (65-69 \u2013 33.12), Jeff Farrell (70-74 \u2013 33.87), Ashley Jones (75-79 \u2013 38.41), Paul Lowry (80-84 \u2013 45.07) and Andrew Holden (85-89 \u2013 56.78) provided the other title-winning times.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 50 breaststroke<\/b><br \/>\nThree more national records fell in the women&#39;s 50 breast.  First, Katie McClelland (30-34) clocked a 29.20 to eclipse the 29.83 set by Wenke Hansen  April 30, 2000.  Then, both Caroline Krattli (30.17) and Kim Crouch (32.59) broke the 45-49 division record of 32.59 set by Melinda Mann on May 18, 2003.  Finally, Leianne Crittenden (50-54) clocked a 33.38 to edge the previous standard of 33.74 set by Danielle Ogier on May 18, 2003.<\/p>\n<p>Others winners were comprised of Karla Bailey (18-24 \u2013 31.25), Laura Kownslar (25-29 \u2013 30.97), Leanne Farmer (35-39 \u2013 31.97), Susan von der Lippe (40-44 \u2013 29.99), Barbara Hummel (55-59 \u2013 36.32), Carolyn Boak (60-64 \u2013 37.26), Barbara Frid (65-69 \u2013 41.19), Donna Ryman (70-74 \u2013 46.66), Nan Bohl (75-79 \u2013 49.22), Florence Carr (80-84 \u2013 1:09.17) and Betty Christian (85-89 \u2013 1:04.99).<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 100 backstroke<\/b><br \/>\nPhilipp Djang (50-54) provided the lone national standard in the event.  He clocked a 57.26 to pip the nine-year-old record of 57.28 set by Hugh Wilder on May 10, 1998.<\/p>\n<p>In other action, Jon Russell (18-24 \u2013 52.43), Ben Erickson (25-29 \u2013 52.96), Jeff Commings (30-34 \u2013 51.63), Lance Bohlman (35-39 \u2013 53.18), Chris Stevenson (40-44 \u2013 51.41), William Specht (45-49 \u2013 57.19), Cliff Johnson (55-59 \u2013 1:04.23), Richard Burns (60-64 \u2013 1:03.40), Hugh Roddin (65-69 \u2013 1:10.80), Ron Mugavin (70-74 \u2013 1:19.98), Bob Miller (75-79 \u2013 1:19.83) and Dale Webster (80-84 \u2013 1:28.90) claimed national title hardware.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 100 backstroke<\/b><br \/>\nKarlyn Pipes-Neilsen (45-49) remained on the assault as she recently aged up to the 45-49 division.  She went a minute-flat (1:00.00) to down the 10-year-old standard of 1:01.50 set by Laura Val on May 18, 1997.  Meanwhile, Betsy Jordan (70-74) set a record with a time of 1:22.08.  That effort surpassed the 1:22.54 recorded by Nancy Brown on May 21, 2006.<\/p>\n<p>Other titlists in the events were comprised of Marifaith Schweitzer (18-24 \u2013 1:00.30), Jessi Crawford (25-29 \u2013 1:00.14), Tobi Limke (30-34 \u2013 1:01.85), Kristin Gary (35-39 \u2013 1:00.22), Janis Gebhart (40-44 \u2013 1:05.02), Patty Landers (50-54 \u2013 1:05.93), Barb Gundred (55-59 \u2013 1:09.59), Joy Ward (60-64 \u2013 1:20.70), Barbara Frid (65-69 \u2013 1:25.93), Lida Gaschke (75-79 \u2013 1:50.88), Margery Meyer (80-84 \u2013 1:58.87) and Betty Christian (85-89 \u2013 1:56.59).<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 200 freestyle<\/b><br \/>\nGraham Johnston (75-79) was at it again, this time taking down Frank Piemme&#39;s April 30, 2000 mark of 2:24.54 with a time of 2:21.77 as the only man in the event to set a national record.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Jon Russell (18-24 \u2013 1:42.07), Ben Weston (25-29 \u2013 1:42.11), Tyler Blessing (30-34 \u2013 1:45.10), Erik Hochstein (35.39 \u2013 1:42.68), Chris Stevenson (40-44 \u2013 1:45.47), Dennis Baker (45-49 \u2013 1:45.04), Jack Groselle (50-54 \u2013 1:48.39), Jim McConica (55-59 \u2013 1:51.94), Rich Abrahams (60-64 \u2013 1:57.77), Tom Landis (65-69 \u2013 2:01.36), Frank Piemme (80-84 \u2013 2:43.25) and Gilbert Young (85-89 \u2013 3:28.68) each garnered national titles.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 200 freestyle<\/b><br \/>\nKarlyn Pipes-Neilsen blasted another 45-49 national standard, this time with a time of 1:55.35 to erase the 1:58.53 set by Laura Val on May 20, 2001.  Val (2:00.50), along with Susan Weston (2:01.05), also destroyed the 55-59 record of 2:11.19 set by Barbara Dunbar on April 25, 2004 with Val finishing with the title and the record.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Ginny Miller (18-24 \u2013 1:59.15), Mollie Grover (25-29 \u2013 1:58.07), Katie McClelland (30-34 \u2013 1:56.96), Jody Smith (35-39 \u2013 1:55.83), Lauree Welting (40-44 \u2013 1:56.17), Charlene O&#39;Brien (50-54 \u2013 2:07.08), Suzanne Dills (60-64 \u2013 2:27.57), Beth Schreiner (65-69 \u2013 2:39.58), Jeanne Little (70-74 \u2013 2:52.26), Nan Bohl (75-79 \u2013 3:05.76), Margery Meyer (80-84 \u2013 3:31.57) and Maurine Kornfeld (85-89 \u2013 3:55.08) pocketed national titles.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 400 IM<\/b><br \/>\nA trio of national records went down in the men&#39;s 400 IM.  Erik Scalise (25-29), John Kenny (45-49) and Tom Landis (65-69) each tracked down their division&#39;s standard.  Scalise touched in 3:52.43 to knock four seconds off the 3:56.69 set by Lionel Moreau on Feb. 17, 2002, while Kenny clocked a 4:22.71 to erase the 4:23.69 set by Tom Reudy on April 30, 2000.  Meanwhile, Landis touched in 5:19.23 to beat Mike Freshley&#39;s 5:21.94 set on May 21, 2006.<\/p>\n<p>In other action, Perry Bullock (18-24 \u2013 4:16.47), Chip Polito (30-34 \u2013 4:19.54), Roque Santos (35-39 \u2013 4:14.66), Brad Meacham (40-44 \u2013 4:22.29), Matt Kanzler (50-54 \u2013 4:35.49), Jim Clemmons (55-59 \u2013 4:44.83), Michael McColly (60-64 \u2013 5:15.27), Dick Peterson (70-74 \u2013 6:10.97), Graham Johnston (75-79 \u2013 6:20.41) and Lou Silverstein (80-84 \u2013 9:57.14) each picked up national titles.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 400 IM<\/b><br \/>\nCharlotte Davis (55-59) provided the final individual national record of the night when she hit the wall in 5:20.36.  That performance chopped four seconds off her previous record of 5:24.43 set on May 22, 2005.<\/p>\n<p>National titles, meanwhile, went to Marifaith Schweitzer (18-24 \u2013 4:37.69), Jessi Crawford (25-29 \u2013 4:43.78), Tobi Limke (30-34 \u2013 4:45.80), Laurie Dodd (35-39 &#8211; 4:50.10), Lauree Welting (40-44 \u2013 4:49.09), Lisa Pace (45-49 \u2013 5:00.13), Colette Crabbe (50-54 \u2013 5:08.89), Suzanne Dills (60-64 \u2013 6:15.97), Susan Meyers (65-69 \u2013 6:37.59), Betsy Jordan (70-74 \u2013 6:51.44) and Gloria Stupfel (80-84 \u2013 13:39.99).<\/p>\n<p><b>Relay Records<\/b><br \/>\nPacific Northwest Aquatics&#39; mixed 55+ 200 medley relay of Gordon Clark (30.13), Steven Peterson (32.95), Charlotte Davis (29.65) and Sally Dillon (29.97) set a record with a time of 2:02.70.  That nipped the previous standard of 2:02.85 set by Tamalpais on April 30, 2000.<\/p>\n<p>In the men&#39;s 75+ 200 free relay, the San Diego Swim Masters contingent of Frank Piemme (31.05), Donald Hubbard (34.29), Dale Webster (31.24) and Ken Kimball (31.79) posted a record of 2:08.37, which shattered the 2:14.12 set by Oregon Masters on Jan. 31, 1998.<\/p>\n<p>In the women&#39;s 55+ 200 free relay, the Pacific Northwest Aquatics&#39; team of Jean Blackburn (35.01), Sarah Welch (29.68), Sally Dillon (30.21) and Charlotte Davis (26.69) clocked a 2:01.59 to wipe out the 10-year-old national record of 2:02.97 previously held by D.C.
