Below is a recap of the events from this morning, including a meet record from Michael Andrew in the 100 butterfly.

Scheduled Events:

Women’s 400 Freestyle

Men’s 400 Freestyle

Women’s 100 Butterfly

Men’s 100 Butterfly

Women’s 400 Freestyle

Karling Hemstreet posted the top time of 4:16.84 from lane 8 in the penultimate heat to grab lane 4 heading into tonight finals. She was followed closely in that heat by Kahra Williams who was just a tenth behind in her in lane 7 (4:16.97). Erika Laning (4:17.45) and Taylor Ruck (4:17.79) from the final heat this morning will join those two in the center lanes for finals. Ruck was the top seed coming into the meet (4:13.51), and will be looking to improve on her third place finish in the 800 free from earlier in the meet. The top four qualifiers all cleared the Olympic Trails cut for the event (4:17.99). Expect this to be a close race tonight, as less than two seconds separate the top 8 qualifiers in the women’s 400 free.

Men’s 400 Freestyle

16 year-old Sean Grieshop led prelims with a 3:54.25 effort, less than a second off of his top seeded 3:53.54. Alongside him in the A final will be Chris Yeager (3:55.13) and Park Jones (3:56.46) who were both under their seed times this morning. It was a tight battle to get into the A final, as places fourth through eight were separated by less than a second (3:57.34 – 3:58.03). The top eleven finishers cleared the Olympic Trails mark of 3:58.69 this morning. Expect to Grieshop to try and challenge Townley Haas’ meet record of 3:51.99 from 2013 in tonight’s final.

Women’s 100 Butterfly

Ella Eastin will lead a tight A final tonight with her top qualifying time of 1:00.04 from the final heat this morning. Eastin has already won the 200 butterfly and 400 IM at this meet, but should expect a tight race this afternoon as Bailey Nero from heat 12 was only two-hundredths behind in 1:00.06. Back in third was Victoria Edwards in 1:00.41, but this could be anybody’s race tonight with all 8 ladies going under 1:01. Notably, Tevyn Waddel from heat 9 dropped almost two full seconds to clear the Olympic Trials Cut and seed herself seventh going into tonights final with a 1:00.69. The top ten qualifiers in this event finished under the Trials standard of 1:01.19.

Men’s 100 Butterfly

The most excitement of this morning’s session came in the last event of prelims, as 16 year-old Michael Andrew threw down a 52.86 to beat his personal best of 53.46 and clear Justin Lynch’s meet record of 52.91. Andrew’s time is only .11 off of the existing 15-16 NAG record that is also held by Justin Lynch, so expect him to have his eyes on that mark tonight. Alongside Andrew in the A final will be Maxime Rooney (53.98) and Ariel Spektor (54.01). Rooney is coming off a win in the 100 freestyle last night, while Spektor dropped almost a full second to get into his first individual A final at the meet. Alex Valente will also be one to watch tonight. Currently seeded sixth with a 54.72, if he can get down to his seed of 52.60 we could see a tight race between him and Andrew tonight.

2015 USA Swimming Summer Junior Nationals: Day 3 Prelims – Results

Day 3 of 2015 Speedo Junior Nationals from San Antonio, Texas included the heats of the men and women’s 400 freestyle and 100 butterfly.
