{"id":146461,"date":"2015-07-29T21:55:41","date_gmt":"2015-07-30T04:55:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=146461"},"modified":"2016-02-03T16:49:05","modified_gmt":"2016-02-03T23:49:05","slug":"bombshell-associated-press-report-olympic-teams-to-swim-boat-in-rios-feces","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/bombshell-associated-press-report-olympic-teams-to-swim-boat-in-rios-feces\/","title":{"rendered":"Bombshell Associated Press Report: Olympic Teams to Swim, Boat in Rio&#8217;s Feces"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to a bombshell Associated Press Report, Olympic and Paralympic teams will be swimming and boating in waters contaminated with human feces during the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Athletes competing in next year&#8217;s Summer Olympics &#8230;\u00a0will be swimming and boating in waters so contaminated with human feces that they risk becoming violently ill and unable to compete in the Games,&#8221; the AP report starts off.<\/p>\n<p><em>Swimming World<\/em> has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/greenpeace-confirms-rio-2016-olympic-venues-are-at-dangerous-levels-of-pollution\/\" target=\"_blank\">continued to keep a close eye on this issue<\/a>, even while the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/jordan-wilimovsky-wins-mens-10k-open-water-race-as-usa-qualifies-2-to-2016-rio-olympics\/\" target=\"_blank\">first Olympians for open water were selected this week at the 2015 World Championships<\/a>, and now the AP has a full-blown independent investigation confirming the safety threat.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What you have there is basically raw sewage,&#8221; said John Griffith, a marine biologist at the Southern California Coastal Water Research Project. &#8220;It&#8217;s all the water from the toilets and the showers and whatever people put down their sinks, all mixed up, and it&#8217;s going out into the beach waters. Those kinds of things would be shut down immediately if found [in the U.S.].&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The AP tests included four separate rounds of testing at all three Olympic open water venues. \u00a0A total of 37 samples were tested for\u00a0&#8220;three types of human adenovirus, as well as rotavirus, enterovirus and fecal coliforms.&#8221; \u00a0This testing found that every single venue was unsafe for competition.<\/p>\n<p>The tests actually found high counts of contamination that can lead to illnesses including &#8220;explosive diarrhea and vomiting, but can also lead to more serious heart, brain and other diseases.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/bigstory.ap.org\/article\/d92f6af5121f49d982601a657d745e95\/ap-investigation-rios-olympic-water-rife-sewage-virus\"
