{"id":146116,"date":"2015-07-29T14:00:34","date_gmt":"2015-07-29T21:00:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=146116"},"modified":"2015-07-29T17:18:52","modified_gmt":"2015-07-30T00:18:52","slug":"meet-mark-schubert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/meet-mark-schubert\/","title":{"rendered":"#30MostSwimfluential: Mark Schubert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Seren Jones, Swimming World College Intern.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Who is Mark Schubert?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Built a reputation as one of America&#8217;s most prestigious coaches over the past five decades.<\/li>\n<li>Held head coaching positions at USC, the University of Texas, and served as the US National Team Director.<\/li>\n<li>An eight-time Olympic coach who helped develop the success of world record holders, ranging from <strong>Brian Goodell<\/strong> in the 1970s to<strong> Rebecca Soni<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Contributed to building the renowned Mission Viejo Nadadores Club team in California into a national success.<\/li>\n<li>Placed more than thirty swimmers on the US Olympic teams and has worked with some of the country&#8217;s finest swimmers including <strong>Janet Evans<\/strong>, <strong>Jill Sterkel<\/strong> and <strong>Sippy Woodhead<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Guided the US team to 47 medals, including 25 gold at the Pan Pacific Games back in 2010.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>How did he influence the swimming community?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Mark Schubert is considered one of swimming&#8217;s most recognizable coaches in US history. His success within the sport led to him being inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on Jan. 10, 1997 under the title of &#8220;Honor Coach.&#8221; He was additionally named &#8220;Coach of The Year&#8221; by five different organizations: American Swimming Coaches Association, United States Olympic Committee, United States Swimming, NCAA and Pac-10.<\/p>\n<p><em>*USA Swimming and Speedo\u00a0invited the swimming community to help celebrate their 30 years of partnership by voting for the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/usa-swimming-speedo-usa-announce-30-most-influential-people-in-swimming-over-the-past-30-years\/\">30 Most Influential People in Swimming Over\u00a0the Past 30 Years.<\/a>&#8221;\u00a0Votes were\u00a0cast through social media with the hashtag #30MostSwimfluential and the final vote came from a panel of 10 judges selected by USA Swimming and Speedo. All 30 nominees have had a powerful impact on the swimming community. Many are recognizable names, but some have remained unsung heroes of the sport.
