PHOENIX, Arizona, April 21. WITH the Virginia Tech tragedy weighing down the week for most of the United States, SwimmingWorldMagazine.com wants to take this opportunity to again send its condolences to the Virginia Tech community and family and friends of loved ones who were senselessly killed during the events of Monday morning.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, the killing spree claimed a member of the swimming community as Daniel Perez Cueva, a 21-year-old member of the Peruvian Swimming Federation, was killed while attending French class at the university.<\/p>\n

In another piece of sad news, Brazilian Olympic trailblazer Maria Lenk passed away. The Brazilian Swimming Federation, however, took immediate steps to memorialize her by naming its spring long course championships after her.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the swimming world still kept moving on \u2013 as it should be in the face of such pointless violence.<\/p>\n

This past week, managing editor Jason Marsteller analyzed the world and American record progressions from the initial three months of competition this year, while senior writer John Lohn kept a close eye on the Swimming South Africa saga in which the federation seems to be penalizing U.S.-trained swimmers such as Roland Schoeman.<\/p>\n

Additionally, Stanford concluded its investigation into Media Guide Gate with a two-month suspension without pay of Skip Kenney due to intentionally changing Stanford's media guide to leave out former swimmers that left on bad terms with Kenney.<\/p>\n

In other news, Gary Hall Jr. inked a three-year deal with Speedo, while a bunch of national records fell throughout the globe.<\/p>\n
