SINGAPORE, April 20, FARRER Park Aquatic Center has been selected by Singapore Masters as the location of the Standard Chartered Masters Championships held from June 30 to July 1.<\/p>\n
Farrer Park is a name synonymous with sports to generations of Singaporeans. It was home to Singapore's first racecourse and housed Sports House, which became the headquarters of the National Sports Promotion Board in the 1970s. The playing fields and sports facilities at Farrer Park are where many renowned sportsmen and sportswomen honed their skills and trained.<\/p>\n
Amongst the many sports personalities who trained at Farrer Park is former Olympian Ang Peng Siong who spent much of his formative years training at the Farrer Park pool. In 1982, Peng Siong set the fastest time in the world for the 50m Freestyle.<\/p>\n
Peng Siong now chairs the SSA Masters Swimming Subcommittee and is active in encouraging adults of all ages to take up masters swimming. <\/p>\n
"It's a great way for people of all ages to stay healthy and active," Peng Siong said. "Swimming is a good form of exercise and low impact. What's more, with masters swimming, you can pick your pet events and set your own personal benchmarks to keep you motivated in your regular fitness routine."<\/p>\n
"We've created a very social and fun atmosphere at masters swim meets. You only compete with swimmers within 5 years of your own age, but most masters swimmers are more focused on setting personal bests. It's about overcoming personal limits," added Peng Siong.<\/p>\n
The inaugural Standard Chartered Masters Swimming Series is aimed at encouraging greater interest in masters swimming. Age is no barrier and participation is open to all comers aged 19 years and above. Masters swim meets provide adults with a series of events to provide greater purpose in fitness swimming, events to look forward to.<\/p>\n
With no shortage of swimming pools across Singapore, public and private, swimming is really a sport that is accessible to everyone. Swimming ranked No. 2 in the most recent Sports Participation Survey conducted by the Singapore Sports Council. The Standard Chartered Masters Swimming Series will stage its next event, the Singapore Masters, at the end of June.
