THE University of Denver pulled off a rare feat when both its men&#39;s and women&#39;s teams topped the Division I team Academic All-American lists for the Fall 2006 semester, according to rankings released today by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA).  <\/p>\n<p>A total of 352 teams \u2013 142 male and 210 female \u2013 earned team Academic All-American honors.<\/p>\n<p>Denver&#39;s men had a combined grade point average (GPA) of 3.482, edging Brown, at 3.458, for the Division I crown.  BYU was third with 3.40, followed by Southern Illinois (3.39) and Yale (3.38).<\/p>\n<p>The DU women topped the 101 Div. I. women&#39;s teams that earned AAA distinction, with a GPA of 3.58. New Mexico State followed at 3.54.  Eastern Michigan (3.52), Brown (3.51), South Carolina and Yale (both 3.49) were right behind. <\/p>\n<p>Under Coach Brian Schrader, Denver has also leapt forward in the water, scoring its best performance at the NCAA championships in more than two decades.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, three men&#39;s teams currently slated to be axed made the list: Butler (3.04), Rutgers (2.99) and James Madison (2.81)<\/p>\n<p>There was a three-way tie for first among the Division II men. Truman State, coached by Mark Gole, the University of Indianapolis coached by Gary Kinkead, and the University of Missouri, Rolla, coached by Doug Grooms, all scored 3.23.  The #1 women&#39;s team, with a GPA of 3.45, was Ed Denney&#39;s squad at California University of Pennsylvania. Bridgeport was second with 3.32.<\/p>\n<p>Washington University, under the direction of Coach Brad Shivley took top honors among the men of Div. III with a score of 3.59.  Pomona-Pitzer (3.55) and Ohio Wesleyan (3.52) took the next two spots.<\/p>\n<p>The women of Hamilton College coached by T.J. Davis matched Washington&#39;s men with an identical 3.59.  That score just nipped Div. III challengers Wilmington (3.58) and Wesleyan (3.57).<\/p>\n<p>In the NAIA, the University of the Cumberlands, coached by Gary Nelson, topped the men&#39;s rankings at 2.95, while Neil Virtue&#39;s squad at Mills College ranked first.among the women with 3.32.<\/p>\n<p>In the junior college ranks, Coach Scott Hunsinger&#39;s Genesee CC men&#39;s team led the way with a 3.48.
