PISCATAWAY, New Jersey, April 14. THE Coalition to Save Our Sports, the Rutgers University group designed to save six sports put on the chopping block, once again made a plea to have a school decision reversed that will take collegiate athletics away from hard-working students. Rutgers has announced that men's swimming, crew, fencing and men's tennis will be eliminated as varsity programs. <\/p>\n
The Coalition met with Rutgers President Richard McCormick and the Board of Governors just after women's basketball coach Vivian Stringer and her players were lauded at the school for the way they handled themselves in the much-publicized ordeal with radio shock jock Don Imus. Of course, Imus was fired by CBS Radio for derogatory comments he recently made against the members of the women's basketball team, which fell to Tennessee in the NCAA title game.<\/p>\n
In the meeting, the Coalition presented its evidence as to why the programs should be spared, and not hacked. Not only do the impacted athletes have some of the highest GPAs on campus, the success of the programs was emphasized, along with the fact that donations raised to save the programs far outweigh what it costs to operate the sports set to be eliminated.<\/p>\n
Two individuals who have been major financial contributors to Rutgers over the years, Bruce Nicholas and Richard Shindell, indicated that they will withdraw future financial donations if moves are not made to restore the programs that are headed out. Despite the threats of pulled money, the Board of Governors did not indicate the possibility of reconsidering its decision. The Coalition will continue to push forward in its attempts and will attend a New Jersey Senate Budget Committee meeting next week.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
