DURHAM, North Carolina, April 5. THE Duke University Athletic Department lost a member of its family on Tuesday, April 3, with the passing of junior diver Chris Sanders. Sanders, an art history\/visual arts major, was 20 years old and was found early Tuesday morning in his dorm room.<\/p>\n
"We deeply regret the news regarding the tragic death of Chris Sanders," said Duke Director of Athletics Joe Alleva. "Chris was well-liked and an extremely valuable member of our swimming and diving program. This is a sad day. Our thoughts and prayers are extended to his family during this difficult time."<\/p>\n
Sanders was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity, the First-Year Advisory Council board and an accomplished diver on the Duke Swimming and Diving team. This past season, Sanders established a career best on the three-meter board with a score of 268.70 to take eighth place in a tri-meet with N.C. State and Maryland. At the Patriot Invitational, Sanders contributed 25 points to Duke's team score by posting finishes of sixth and seventh on the three- and one-meter boards, respectively.<\/p>\n
Sanders' sophomore year saw him record the second-best score on the team in each of the springboard events. As a freshman, he participated in the one- and three-meter events in every meet for the Blue Devils, and established a career best on the one-meter board, recording a score of 242.40.<\/p>\n
A native of New Haven, Conn., Sanders was a 2004 graduate of Notre Dame High School. At Notre Dame, he qualified for state championships all four years and placed in the top five in his final three seasons at conference finals to earn all-conference accolades. He was named all-state and was an Academic All-America honoree as a senior. Sanders was a three-year letterwinner in soccer at Notre Dame and received National Merit Commendation and the Notre Dame Latin medal. He was also a member of National Honor Society, Latin Honor Society and the school newspaper.<\/p>\n
Sanders is survived by parents, Arthur and Margaret Sanders, and a brother, John.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
