Women’s 800 Free Timed Finals Heat 1<\/strong><\/p>\n

Brazil’s Bruna Veronez<\/strong> dominated the first heat of the women’s 800-meter free timed finals this morning.<\/p>\n

Veronez clocked a time of 8:40.75 to lead heat one by more than five seconds as she cut a second off her personal best to post the time to beat this evening.<\/p>\n

Mexico’s Monserrat Ortuno<\/strong> (8:45.81) and Natalia Jaspeado<\/strong> (8:53.70) finished second and third.<\/p>\n

Guatemala’s Valeria Gruest<\/strong> (8:55.62), Colombia’s Maria Alvarez<\/strong> (8:57.29), El Salvador’s Rebeca Quinteros<\/strong> (9:07.98), Aruba’s Daniella Van Den Berg<\/strong> (9:12.30) and Barbados’ Lani Cabrera<\/strong> (9:16.88) also swam in the initial heat of the day.<\/p>\n

Women’s 200 IM<\/strong><\/p>\n

USA’s Caitlin Leverenz<\/strong> and Canada’s Sydney Pickrem<\/strong> pushed each other to Pan American Games record-breaking times in the women’s 200-meter IM.<\/p>\n

In the final heat, Leverenz touched out Pickrem 2:11.04 to 2:11.16. \u00a0That gave Leverenz the Pan American Games mark, breaking the 2:13.07 set by Julia Smit<\/strong> back in 2007. \u00a0The time also cleared Leverenz’s seventh-ranked season best of 2:11.40 as she moved up to fifth in the world.<\/p>\n

Pickrem snagged sixth in the world with a personal best as she broke the Canadian record in the event. Her 2:11.16 surpassed the 2:11.23 set by Erica Morningstar<\/strong> back in 2011.<\/p>\n

USA’s Meghan Small<\/strong> (2:13.90), Canada’s Erika Seltenreich-Hodgson<\/strong> (2:14.02), Jamaica’s Alia Atkinson<\/strong> (2:15.16), Brazil’s Joanna Maranhao<\/strong> (2:15.32), Argentina’s Virginia Bardach<\/strong> (2:16.86) and Brazil’s Gabrielle Goncalves<\/strong> (2:17.67) also made finals.<\/p>\n

Argentina’s Florencia Perotti<\/strong> (2:18.95), Mexico’s Arantxa Medina<\/strong> (2:19.26), Peru’s McKenna De Bever<\/strong> (2:21.65), Venezuela’s Mercedes Toledo<\/strong> (2:25.24), Honduras’ Karen Vilorio<\/strong> (2:25.87), Cayman Islands’ Lara Butler<\/strong> (2:26.50) and Bermudas’ Lisa Blackburn<\/strong> (2:29.04) will battle in the B final.<\/p>\n

Men’s 200 IM<\/strong><\/p>\n

Two-time defending champion Thiago Pereira<\/strong> took it easy during prelims of the men’s 200-meter IM at the Pan American Games as he just made sure he made the A final.<\/p>\n

Pereira, who suffered a difficult gold-medal disqualification in the 400-meter IM earlier this week<\/a>, will be looking for his 22nd career Pan American Games medal to break the overall record after qualifying in fifth in 2:01.68.<\/p>\n

Brazil’s Henrique Rodrigues<\/strong> was the only sub-2:00 time with a 1:59.91, while USA’s Ty Stewart<\/strong> (2:00.25) and Gunnar Bentz<\/strong> (2:01.26) qualified second and third.<\/p>\n

Canada’s Luke Reilly<\/strong> (2:01.42), Canada’s Evan White<\/strong> (2:02.43), Venezuela’s Carlos Omana<\/strong> (2:02.92), and Colombia’s Omar Pinzon<\/strong> (2:02.94) will also vie for the gold medal.<\/p>\n

Mexico’s Jose Martinez<\/strong> (2:03.30), El Salvador’s Rafael Alfaro<\/strong> (2:03.89), Venezuela’s Juan Sequera<\/strong> (2:04.51), Paraguay’s Matias Lopez<\/strong> (2:05.09), Mexico’s Ezequiel Trujillo<\/strong> (2:05.69), Argentina’s Esteban Paz<\/strong> (2:07.55), Chile’s Felipe Quiroz<\/strong> (2:08.04) and Cuba’s Luis Vega<\/strong> (2:08.09) grabbed the B final spots.<\/p>\n

Men’s 1500\u00a0Free Timed Finals Heats 1, 2<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mexico’s Ricardo Vargas<\/strong> came storming home the final 50 meters to overtake Venezuela’s Alejandro Gomez<\/strong> for the top time in the men’s 1500 free heading into tonight’s final heat.<\/p>\n

Vargas touched out Gomez, 15:27.23 to 15:27.30, to set the Mexican record, breaking the 15:24.58 set by Arturo Perez\u00a0at the 2012 Canada Trials.<\/p>\n

Perez finished third this morning in 15:42.39, while Ecuador’s Tomas Peribonio<\/strong> put up a 15:43.36 for fourth this morning.<\/p>\n

Argentina’s Martin Naidich<\/strong> (15:46.99), Puerto Rico’s Christian Bayo<\/strong> (15:49.47), Venezuela’s Andy Arteta<\/strong> (15:56.57), Chile’s Felipe Tapia<\/strong> (16:08.48) and Peru’s Gustavo Gutierrez<\/strong> (16:08.75) also competed this morning.<\/p>\n

Women’s 400 medley relay<\/strong><\/p>\n

Natalie Coughlin<\/strong> started Team USA’s women’s 400-meter medley relay with a Pan American Games record in the 100 back with the rest of the team finishing off a record of its own.<\/p>\n

Coughlin raced her way to a sizzling time of 59.20 to break the previous Pan American Games mark of 59.61 set by Etiene Medeiros<\/strong> during her 100 back gold medal performance last night.<\/p>\n

That put Coughlin fourth in the world rankings this year.<\/p>\n

Team USA’s Coughlin (59.20), Katie Meili<\/strong> (1:06.57), Kelsi Worrell<\/strong> (57.63) and Allison Schmitt<\/strong> (53.95) finished off a scorching time of 3:57.35. \u00a0That swim blasted USA’s 2011 Pan American Games mark of 4:01.00.<\/p>\n

Canada’s Dominique Bouchard<\/strong> (1:01.18), Tera Van Beilen<\/strong> (1:09.04), Noemie Thomas<\/strong> (58.30) and Sandrine Mainville<\/strong> (53.76) qualified second in 4:02.28.<\/p>\n

Brazil’s Natalia De Luccas<\/strong> (1:03.07), Beatriz Travalon<\/strong> (1:10.08), Daynara De Paula<\/strong> (1:01.09) and Larissa Martins<\/strong> (56.82) qualified third in 4:11.06.<\/p>\n

Mexico (4:12.63), Argentina (4:15.66), Venezuela (4:20.22), Jamaica (4:24.18) and Peru (4:32.62) will also swim tonight.<\/p>\n

Men’s 400 medley relay<\/strong><\/p>\n

Team USA led the way in the men’s 400-meter medley relay prelims at the 2015 Pan American Games.<\/p>\n

Nick Thoman<\/strong> (55.06), Brad Craig<\/strong> (1:01.35), Eugene Godsoe<\/strong> (52.76) and Michael Weiss<\/strong> (49.82) put up the top time of the morning with a 3:38.99.<\/p>\n

Canada’s Russell Wood<\/strong> (55.22), James Dergousoff<\/strong> (1:02.27), Coleman Allen<\/strong> (52.77) and Yuri Kisil<\/strong> (48.83) qualified second in 3:39.09.<\/p>\n

Brazil put itself in the best position to provide Thiago Pereira<\/strong> with a record-tying and record-breaking run of medals tonight in terms of the career medals mark as Pereira leadoff the team in backstroke.<\/p>\n

With just one team to beat to make finals, Pereira (58.40), Felipe Lima<\/strong> (59.83), Arthur Mendes<\/strong> (52.38) and Marcelo Chierighini<\/strong> (52.22) qualified third in 3:42.83 to guarantee Pereira a medal as a preliminary relay swimmer should Brazil claim a likely medal tonight.<\/p>\n

Following a gold-medal disqualification in the 400-meter IM, Pereira stands at 21 career Pan American Games medals. \u00a0One more will tie him with Cuban gymnast Erick Lopez<\/strong> as the most medalled competitor in Pan American Games history. \u00a0He will likely do that during the 200-meter IM tonight.<\/p>\n

The likely relay medal will push him over the top into sole possession of 23 Pan American Games medals.<\/p>\n

Argentina (3:44.17), Mexico (3:45.60), Colombia (3:46.02), Venezuela (3:46.91) and Paraguay (3:47.72) will also swim in the finale.<\/p>\n
