{"id":144563,"date":"2015-07-17T12:27:33","date_gmt":"2015-07-17T19:27:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=144563"},"modified":"2016-02-03T16:49:08","modified_gmt":"2016-02-03T23:49:08","slug":"ryan-lochte-2020-olympics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ryan-lochte-2020-olympics\/","title":{"rendered":"Ryan Lochte Might Extend Career Four Years To 2020 Olympics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i>Coverage of the World Championships is sponsored by <a href=\"http:\/\/ads.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/abmc.aspx?b=939&amp;z=6\" target=\"_blank\">Wylas Timing<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>By Jeff Commings, Swimming World Senior Writer<\/i><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ryan Lochte<\/strong> would be 36 years old if he competed at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, but the 11-time Olympic medalist isn\u2019t ruling out the possibility of extending his career for an appearance at a fifth Olympics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told myself I\u2019d quit swimming if I stopped having fun in the sport,\u201d the 30-year-old Lochte told reporters during a conference call. \u201cI don\u2019t seeing myself doing that anytime soon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Media and fan speculation had Lochte retiring after next year\u2019s Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. But as <strong>Dara Torres, Anthony Ervin<\/strong> and others have shown, swimming has become a much older sport, with 30 years old no longer the perceived limit for an athlete\u2019s swimming ability. And Lochte feels like a career outside the pool might not be as easy as the grind of three-hour training sessions or as thrilling as racing against the best in the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSwimming is my home,\u201d he said. \u201cEvery time I step in that water, I\u2019m in my own universe. I\u2019m one with the water.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lochte is prepping for his sixth world championships appearance, and the quest to increase his impressive medal tally. He\u2019s won 23 world championships medals, 10 fewer than <strong>Michael Phelps<\/strong>. Swimming through at least the 2019 world championships would give him the opportunity to chase Phelps\u2019 all-time medal record.<\/p>\n<p>Lochte will definitely swim three events in Kazan, Russia, next month at worlds: 200 freestyle, 200 individual medley and 800 freestyle relay. He could get picked for the 400 free relay as well. Lochte\u2019s going for history in the 200 IM, hoping to win his fourth consecutive world title and join <strong>Grant Hackett<\/strong> as the only men to win four titles in the same event.<\/p>\n<p>With Phelps out of the meet, and Japan\u2019s <strong>Kosuke Hagino<\/strong> also missing the meet <a href=http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/kosuke-hagino-out-of-world-championships-with-broken-elbow\/ target=_blank>due to an injury<\/a>, Lochte appears to have smooth sailing toward 200 IM gold medal number four. But he doesn\u2019t see it that way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust because they\u2019re not there doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s going to be a shoo-in,\u201d Lochte said. \u201cThere are so many other swimmers that are up and coming,\u201d such as Japan\u2019s <strong>Daiya Seto<\/strong>, who has beat Lochte on a couple of occasions recently. Another name to watch is <strong>Laszlo Cseh<\/strong> of Hungary, the 2008 Olympic silver medalist ahead of Lochte.<\/p>\n<p>Though Lochte is only entered in two individual races at worlds \u2013 the result of subpar swimming in 2014, \u201cmy worst year ever,\u201d he said \u2013 he\u2019s expected to contend for many more at next year\u2019s Olympic Trials. Fans will want him to stick around for the 2020 Trials, but Lochte will keep such a decision secretive until the time is right.<\/p>\n<p>The Rio Games \u201ccould be my last (Olympics) or I could go another four years,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m taking each year at a time, and also each race at a time.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Coverage of the World Championships is sponsored by Wylas Timing.
