Hit refresh for the latest coverage.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Women&#8217;s 100 back<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>USA&#8217;s <strong>Olivia Smoliga<\/strong> uncorked a Pan American Games record during prelims of the women&#8217;s 100-meter back at the 2015 Pan American Games.<\/p>\n<p>Smoliga went out like a rocket and came home just as fast as she clocked a top-seeded time of 1:00.35. \u00a0That swim beat <strong>Rachel Bootsma&#8217;s<\/strong> games record from 2011 and moved Smoliga into 20th in the world rankings.<\/p>\n<p>Canada&#8217;s <strong>Dominique Bouchard<\/strong>, who is ranked 14th in the world in the event with a 1:00.20 from Canadian Trials, qualified second in 1:00.44, while Brazil&#8217;s <strong>Etiene Medeiros<\/strong> earned the third seed in 1:00.74.<\/p>\n<p>USA&#8217;s <strong>Clara Smiddy<\/strong> (1:00.79), Canada&#8217;s <strong>Hilary Caldwell<\/strong> (1:00.97), Guatemala&#8217;s <strong>Gisela Morales<\/strong> (1:00.99), Mexico&#8217;s <strong>Maria Gonzalez<\/strong> (1:01.25) and Argentina&#8217;s <strong>Andrea Berrino<\/strong> (1:01.32) closed out the A finalists.<\/p>\n<p>Brazil&#8217;s <strong>Natalia De Luccas<\/strong> (1:01.89), Colombia&#8217;s <strong>Carolina Colorado<\/strong> (1:02.10), Colombia&#8217;s <strong>Isabella Arcila<\/strong> (1:02.62), Mexico&#8217;s <strong>Estela Davis<\/strong> (1:03.36), Venezuela&#8217;s <strong>Carla Gonzalez<\/strong> (1:04.09), Honduras&#8217; <strong>Karen Vilorio<\/strong> (1:04.29), Argentina&#8217;s <strong>Florencia Perotti<\/strong> (1:04.81) and Peru&#8217;s <strong>McKenna De Bever<\/strong> (1:05.00) picked up the B final spots.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Men&#8217;s 100 back<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Brazil&#8217;s <strong>Guilherme Guido<\/strong> looks to be the clear favorite in the men&#8217;s 100-meter back finals at the Pan American Games after a swift preliminary swim.<\/p>\n<p>Guido topped all qualifiers with a time of 54.04, while USA&#8217;s <strong>Nick Thoman<\/strong> (54.35) and <strong>Eugene Godso<\/strong>e (54.38) qualified second and third.<\/p>\n<p>Canada&#8217;s<strong> Russell Wood<\/strong> (54.55), Argentina&#8217;s <strong>Federico Grabich<\/strong> (54.87), Colombia&#8217;s <strong>Omar Pinzon<\/strong> (54.94), Venezuela&#8217;s<strong> Albert Subirats<\/strong> (55.24) and Canada&#8217;s<strong> Markus Thormeyer<\/strong> (55.26) will also compete in the A final.<\/p>\n<p>Cuba&#8217;s <strong>Armando Barrera<\/strong> (56.14), Paraguay&#8217;s <strong>Charles Hockin<\/strong> (56.56), Venezuela&#8217;s <strong>Robinson Molina<\/strong> (57.08), Guatemala&#8217;s <strong>Luis Martinez<\/strong> (57.22), Mexico&#8217;s <strong>Daniel Torres<\/strong> (57.38), Jamaica&#8217;s <strong>Timothy Wynter<\/strong> (57.86), Barbados&#8217; <strong>Chris Courtis<\/strong> (58.15) and Virgin Islands&#8217; <strong>Matt Mays<\/strong> (59.15) comprise the consolation field.<\/p>\n<p>Following <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/brandonn-almeida-delivered-400-im-gold-after-shocking-thiago-pereira-dq-at-pan-american-games\/\" target=\"_blank\">a tough gold-medal disqualification last night<\/a>, Brazil&#8217;s <strong>Thiago Pereira<\/strong> scratched the 100 back this morning.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Men&#8217;s 400 free<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>USA&#8217;s <strong>Kiera Janzen<\/strong> set herself up for a potentially special swim during finals of the women&#8217;s 400-meter free.<\/p>\n<p>Janzen clocked an easy-speed 4:11.82 for the top seed, and still has a lifetime best of 4:10.25 from last summer&#8217;s nationals to summon during finals.<\/p>\n<p>Venezuela&#8217;s <strong>Andreina Pinto<\/strong> rode Janzen&#8217;s hip through 350 meters before fading a bit for the second seed in 4:12.43.<\/p>\n<p>Brazil&#8217;s <strong>Manuella Lyrio<\/strong> (4:15.38), Bahamas&#8217; <strong>Joanna Evans<\/strong> (4:15.51), USA&#8217;s <strong>Gillian Ryan<\/strong> (4:15.95), Colombia&#8217;s <strong>Maria Alvarez<\/strong> (4:16.90), Brazil&#8217;s <strong>Carolina Bilich<\/strong> (4:16.92) and Canada&#8217;s<strong> Emily Overholt<\/strong> (4:18.21) will also compete in the A final.<\/p>\n<p>Mexico&#8217;s <strong>Natalia Jaspeado<\/strong> (4:18.30), Canada&#8217;s <strong>Tabitha Baumann<\/strong> (4:18.70), Mexico&#8217;s <strong>Allyson Macias<\/strong> (4:20.45), Cuba&#8217;s <strong>Elisbet Gamez<\/strong> (4:21.10), Peru&#8217;s <strong>Andrea Cedron<\/strong> (4:21.31), Guatemala&#8217;s <strong>Gabriela Santis<\/strong> (4:24.73), Aruba&#8217;s <strong>Dan Van Den Berg<\/strong> (4:28.01) and El Salvador&#8217;s <strong>Rebeca Quinteros<\/strong> (4:29.19) wound up in the B final.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Men&#8217;s 400 free<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hometown favorite <strong>Ryan Cochrane<\/strong> put up the top seed in the men&#8217;s 400-meter free this morning.<\/p>\n<p>Cochrane, who is ranked 13th in the world with a 3:47.50 from Canadian Trials, paced prelims with a time of 3:50.58.<\/p>\n<p>Brazil&#8217;s <strong>Leonardo De Deus<\/strong> put up a 3:51.40 for the second seed, while USA&#8217;s <strong>Michael Klueh<\/strong> (3:51.76) and<strong> Ryan Feeley<\/strong> (3:51.79) nearly tied in their heat en route to the third and fourth seeds.<\/p>\n<p>Canada&#8217;s <strong>Jeremy Bagshaw<\/strong> (3:52.13), Venezuela&#8217;s <strong>Cristian Quintero<\/strong> (3:52.63), Colombia&#8217;s <strong>Mateo De Angulo<\/strong> (3:53.01) and Mexico&#8217;s<strong> Ricardo Vargas<\/strong> (3:53.40) will also vie for the title.<\/p>\n<p>Brazil&#8217;s <strong>Lucas Kanieski<\/strong> (3:53.80), Puerto Rico&#8217;s <strong>Christian Bayo<\/strong> (3:53.93), Venezuela&#8217;s <strong>Rafael Davila<\/strong> (3:54.23), Argentina&#8217;s <strong>Martin Naidich<\/strong> (3:54.44), El Salvador&#8217;s <strong>Marcelo Acosta<\/strong> (3:54.83), Ecuador&#8217;s <strong>Tomas Peribonio<\/strong> (3:55.70), Argentina&#8217;s <strong>Juan Pereyra<\/strong> (3:56.86) and Mexico&#8217;s <strong>Arturo Perez<\/strong> (4:00.28) made their way into the B final.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Women&#8217;s 100 breast<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>USA&#8217;s <strong>Katie Meili<\/strong> unleashed a blistering Pan American Games record time during prelims of the women&#8217;s 100-meter breast at the 2015 Pan American Games.<\/p>\n<p>Meili threw down a sizzling time of 1:05.64 this morning to move from fourth in the world (1:06.50 on the Arena Pro Swim Series) to second behind only <strong>Ruta Meilutyte<\/strong> (1:05.46).<\/p>\n<p><strong>100 Breast World Rankings<\/strong><\/p>\n[table \u201c\u201d not found \/]<br \/>\n\n<p>That swim demolished the previous Pan American Games record of 1:07.78 set by <strong>Annamay Pierse<\/strong> of Canada back in 2007.<\/p>\n<p>Canada&#8217;s<strong> Rachel Nicol<\/strong> raced her way to the second see in 1:07.10. \u00a0That swim pushed her to 13th in the world rankings.<\/p>\n<p>Jamaica&#8217;s <strong>Alia Atkinson<\/strong>, already ranked sixth in the world with a 1:06.79 from the Arena Pro Swim Series, cruised into the third seed in 1:07.46.<\/p>\n<p>Canada&#8217;s <strong>Tera Van Beilen<\/strong> (1:08.11), Brazil&#8217;s <strong>Jhennifer Conceicao<\/strong> (1:08.75), USA&#8217;s <strong>Annie Lazor<\/strong> (1:08.94), Brazil&#8217;s <strong>Beatriz Travalon<\/strong>\u00a0(1:08.99) and Argentina&#8217;s <strong>Macarena Ceballos<\/strong> (1:09.97) will also swim in the A final.<\/p>\n<p>Argentina&#8217;s<strong> Julia Sebastian<\/strong> (1:10.02), Venezuela&#8217;s <strong>Mercedes Toledo<\/strong> (1:10.53), Mexico&#8217;s <strong>Esther Gonzalez<\/strong> (1:10.83), Mexico&#8217;s <strong>Arantxa Medina<\/strong> (1:11.70), Bahamas&#8217; <strong>Laura Morley<\/strong> (1:14.70), Peru&#8217;s <strong>Paula Tamashiro<\/strong> (1:15.46), Suriname&#8217;s <strong>Evita Leter<\/strong> (1:51.84) and Bermuda&#8217;s<strong> Lisa Blackburn<\/strong> (1:16.14) snared the B final lanes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Men&#8217;s 100 breast<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Brazil&#8217;s <strong>Felipe Silva<\/strong> became the first man under 1:00 in the men&#8217;s 100-meter breast at the Pan American Games with the meet record.<\/p>\n<p>Silva cranked out a 59.84 in heat 2 to break <strong>Mark Gangloff&#8217;s<\/strong> 2007 record of 1:00.24. \u00a0That swim matched Silva&#8217;s season best of 59.84 from the Maria Lenk Trophy meet that ranks him eighth in the world.<\/p>\n<p>Colombia&#8217;s <strong>Jorge Murillo<\/strong> turned in the second seed with a time of 1:00.53, while Brazil&#8217;s <strong>Felipe Lima<\/strong> clocked a third-seeded 1:00.57. Lima is ranked fifth in the world with a 59.78 from the Maria Lenk Trophy meet and should push the pace in finals.<\/p>\n<p>Canada&#8217;s <strong>Richard Funk<\/strong> (1:00.80), USA&#8217;s <strong>Brad Craig<\/strong> (1:01.29), USA&#8217;s <strong>BJ Johnson<\/strong> (1:01.61), Mexico&#8217;s<strong> Miguel De Lara<\/strong> (1:01.85) and Panama&#8217;s <strong>Edgar Crespo<\/strong> (1:02.01) qualified fourth through eighth.<\/p>\n<p>Venezuela&#8217;s <strong>Carlos Claverie<\/strong> (1:02.02), Argentina&#8217;s <strong>Facundo Miguelena<\/strong> (1:03.03), Bahamas&#8217; <strong>Dustin Tynes<\/strong> (1:03.15), Canada&#8217;s <strong>James Dergousof<\/strong>f (1:03.28), Paraguay&#8217;s <strong>Renato Prono<\/strong> (1:03.75), Bermudas&#8217; <strong>Julian Fletcher<\/strong> (1:03.87), Aruba&#8217;s <strong>Jordy Groters<\/strong> (1:03.92) and Uruguay&#8217;s <strong>Martin Melconian<\/strong> (1:04.26) moved on to the B final.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Women&#8217;s 50 free<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace<\/strong> of the Bahamas set the pool on fire with a meet record 24.31 in heat 4 of the 50 free to top qualifiers. The time is four hundredths faster than her previous best of 2015, a 24.35 from the Arena Pro Swim Series in Charlotte in May. Vanderpool-Wallace remains ranked fourth in the world as she led five swimmers under 25-seconds including a pair under the Games record.<\/p>\n<p>Two heats earlier,\u00a0Brazil\u2019s <strong>Etiene Medeiros<\/strong> branched out from backstroke to post a 24.75, just missing her national record of 24.74. But, that time was the first ever under 25-seconds in Pan American Games history as she beat <strong>Lara Jackson&#8217;s<\/strong> 2011 record of 25.09.<\/p>\n<p>Vanderpool-Wallace and Medeiros were joined by three\u00a0more swimmers under 25 seconds in the historic prelim session.\u00a0American <strong>Madison Kennedy<\/strong> put forth a strong 24.75 to tie for second, while Brazil\u2019s <strong>Graciele Herrmann\u00a0<\/strong>(24.95) and 100 free winner <strong>Chantal Van Landeghem<\/strong> of Canada (24.97) rounded out the top five.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Natalie Coughlin<\/strong> of the USA made the final with a 25.07 for sixth, tying her with Canada\u2019s <strong>Michelle Williams<\/strong>. Puerto Rico\u2019s <strong>Vanessa Garcia<\/strong> snuck into eighth position with a 25.37.<\/p>\n<p>Mexico\u2019s <strong>Iliana Ibanez<\/strong> will take the top spot in the B final tonight after her 25.46 for ninth place overall. She\u2019ll be joined by <strong>Chinyere Pigot<\/strong> of of Venezuela (25.83), <strong>Arlene Semoco<\/strong> of Venezuela (25.83), <strong>Isabela Arcila<\/strong> of Colombia (25.89), <strong>Karen Torrez<\/strong> of Bolivia (26.01), <strong>Aixa Triay<\/strong> of Argentina (26.03), <strong>Allyson Ponson<\/strong> of Aruba (26.22) and <strong>Ariel Weech<\/strong> of Bahamas (26.32).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Men&#8217;s 50 free<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Josh Schneider<\/strong> and <strong>Cullen Jones<\/strong> will look to snap Brazil&#8217;s winning streak in the 50 free at the Pan American Games, as the Americans qualified 1-2 in the event. Brazil has won the splash-and-dash at the past five meets, and Schneider&#8217;s 21.97 in the first heat sent a strong message. it&#8217;s just a tick slower than he&#8217;s already swum this year at the Arena Pro Swim Series in Charlotte, and he&#8217;ll need to be close to or better than his lifetime best of 21.78 to win gold. Jones posted a 22.12 for second place, while Argentinian breakout <strong>Federico Grabich<\/strong>, the 100 free winner, was third with a 22.25.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Renzo Tjon-A-Joe<\/strong> of Suriname qualified fourth with a 22.31, breaking his own national record of 22.53 from last April&#8217;s Arena Pro Swim Series meet in Mesa. <strong>Bruno Fratus<\/strong> of Brazil is looking to make it six in a row for his native country, getting into the final with a 22.33 for fifth.
