USA’s Giles Smith<\/strong> clipped the Pan American Games record in the men’s 100-meter fly for the victory.<\/p>\n

Smith, who has a 52.02 lifetime best to his credit, captured gold in 52.04. \u00a0That swim downed Kaio Almeida’s<\/strong> meet record of 52.05 from 2007 and moved Smith to 20th in the world this year.<\/p>\n

Argentina’s Santiago Grassi<\/strong> finished with a silver in 52.09, just .05 seconds behind. \u00a0Grassi’s time is a new Argentinian record, breaking his previous mark of 52.34.<\/p>\n

Canada’s Santo Condorelli<\/strong> snared bronze in 52.42 to better his lifetime best of 52.50 and come up a bit short of Joe Bartoch’s<\/strong> Canadian record of 52.28 from 2008.<\/p>\n

Venezuela’s Albert Subirats<\/strong> (52.52), Mexico’s Long Gutierrez<\/strong> (52.58), USA’s Eugene Godsoe<\/strong> (52.66), Brazil’s Arthur Mendes<\/strong> (52.73) and Guatemala’s Luis Martinez<\/strong> (52.75) finished fourth through eighth.<\/p>\n

Peru’s Mauricio Fiol<\/strong> had been in the A final before being booted from the Pan American Games for testing positive for a steroid<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The consolation heat proved to be the closest a 1-2-3 finish can happen.<\/p>\n

Paraguay’s Ben Hockin<\/strong>, who previously swam for Great Britain, snagged the B final in 53.45. \u00a0Canada’s Coleman Allen<\/strong> finished second in 53.46, with Argentina’s Marcos Barale<\/strong> earning third in 53.47.<\/p>\n

Colombia’s Esnaider Reales<\/strong> (54.03), Puerto Rico’s Andrew Torres<\/strong> (54.77), Honduras’ Allan Gutierrez<\/strong> (55.21) and Bolivia’s Aldo Castillo Sulca<\/strong> (56.97) also put up times in the B final.<\/p>\n
