{"id":144054,"date":"2015-07-16T08:24:31","date_gmt":"2015-07-16T15:24:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=144054"},"modified":"2017-06-14T17:02:45","modified_gmt":"2017-06-15T00:02:45","slug":"u-s-paralympian-becca-meyers-wins-espy-and-breaks-world-record-in-two-day-span","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/u-s-paralympian-becca-meyers-wins-espy-and-breaks-world-record-in-two-day-span\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. Paralympian Becca Meyers Wins ESPY and Breaks World Record in Two Day Span"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While preparing for the 400 meter freestyle at the 2015 IPC Swimming World Championships, Paralympic swimmer <strong>Becca Meyers<\/strong> was simultaneously winning the 2015 ESPY award for Best Female Athlete with a Disability.<\/p>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baltimoresun.com\/sports\/olympics\/bs-sp-becca-meyers-wins-espy-award-716-20150716-story.html\">piece<\/a> by the Baltimore Sun, Meyers was born deaf and was diagnosed with Usher syndrome, a genetic disorder that causes gradual loss of balance and vision. But Meyers has not let these circumstances slow her down.<\/p>\n<p>At the 2014 Pan Pacific-Para Championships, she set world records in the 400 freestyle and 200 IM and won a total of six medals. Two days before winning the ESPY,\u00a0Meyers re-broke her SM13 200 IM world record with a time of 2:24.60 at the IPC World Championships.<\/p>\n<p>According to the piece, Meyers was honored just to be nominated for the ESPY award.\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s amazing how being nominated and winning for Paralympics brings a lot of awareness to the sport [of swimming],&#8221; she said. &#8220;That\u2019s one of the reasons I do this is to raise awareness and give back. If you asked me five years ago, I wouldn\u2019t have believed I\u2019d be in this position [to win an ESPY and give back],&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Meyers was up for the award against four other nominees; <strong>Tatyana McFadden<\/strong>, <strong>Oksana Masters<\/strong>, <strong>Kendall Gretsch<\/strong> and <strong>Greta Neimanas<\/strong> were all in the running as well. In the end, Meyers claimed the award, even though she was not in attendance at the ceremony. \u201cIt\u2019s amazing. It\u2019s been a roller coaster the past couple of years and I\u2019m still on it. I know I still have more to accomplish and I look at all of this as just the beginning. I\u2019m still in shock about the award,\u201d Meyers said in the piece.<\/p>\n<p>Meyers may currently be representing the entire United States, but she had a special message for home town as well. \u201cThank you so much for voting for me,&#8221; Meyers said. &#8220;I can\u2019t put into words my love and appreciation for everyone, especially back in Baltimore,\u201d Meyers
