Women’s 200 free<\/strong><\/p>\n

The legendary 1979 Pan American Games record of 1:58.43 set by USA’s Sippy Woodhead<\/strong> is on notice after USA’s Allison Schmitt<\/strong> threw down a 1:58.58 for the top seed into the A final.<\/p>\n

Schmitt has already been under the record this year with a season best 16th-ranked 1:57.24 from the Charlotte stop of the Arena Pro Swim Series. \u00a0Look for her to go much faster in finals.<\/p>\n

Brazil’s Manuella Lyrio<\/strong> (1:59.60) and Larissa Martins<\/strong> (1:59.62) snared the second and third seeds, while Canada’s Katerine Savard<\/strong> also cleared 2:00 with a fourth-seeded 1:59.74.<\/p>\n

USA’s Kiera Janzen<\/strong> (2:00.30), Canada’s Emily Overholt<\/strong> (2:00.43), Venezuela’s Andreina Pinto<\/strong> (2:00.61) and Cuba’s Elisbet Gamez<\/strong> (2:01.85) rounded out the A final.<\/p>\n

Colombia’s Jessica Camposano<\/strong> (2:02.27) and Maria Alvarez<\/strong> (2:02.48) qualified ninth and 10th to lead the B finalists.<\/p>\n

Peru’s Andrea Cedron<\/strong> (2:04.55), Mexico’s Natalia Jaspeado<\/strong> (2:05.21), El Salvador’s Rebeca Quinteros<\/strong> (2:05.26), Venezuela’s Andrea Garrido<\/strong> (2:05.31), Guatemala’s Gabriela Santis<\/strong> (2:05.37) and Mexico’s Maria Richaud<\/strong> (2:06.84) will also swim in the consolation heat.<\/p>\n

Men’s 200 free<\/strong><\/p>\n

Venezuela’s Cristian Quintero<\/strong> picked up the top seed in what looks to be a stacked finale of the men’s 200-meter free.<\/p>\n

Quintero clocked a top time of 1:48.42, just ahead of USA’s Michael Weiss<\/strong> (1:48.55).<\/p>\n

Argentina’s Federico Grabich<\/strong>, the 100 free victor<\/a>, snared the third seed in 1:48.61 with USA’s Michael Klueh<\/strong> just behind with a fourth-seeded 1:48.67.<\/p>\n

The top seeds have some time to drop to take down Brett Fraser’s<\/strong> meet record of 1:47.18 from 2011.<\/p>\n

Canada’s Jeremy Bagshaw<\/strong> (1:48.76), Brazil’s Joao De Lucca<\/strong> (1:48.78), Brazil’s Nicolas Oliveira<\/strong> (1:49.51) and Paraguay’s Ben Hockin<\/strong> (1:49.59) will also compete in the A final.<\/p>\n

Venezuela’s Marcos Lavado<\/strong> (1:49.91), Mexico’s Luis Campos<\/strong> (1:50.24), Canada’s Alec Page<\/strong> (1:50.34), Colombia’s Mateo De Angulo<\/strong> (1:50.50), Ecuador’s Tomas Peribonio<\/strong> (1:51.61), El Salvador’s Marcelo Acosta<\/strong> (1:51.77), Guatemala’s Luis Martinez<\/strong> (1:51.79) and Argentina’s Guido Buscaglia<\/strong> (1:52.95) will swim in the B final.<\/p>\n

Women’s 200 breast<\/strong><\/p>\n

Canada’s Kierra Smith<\/strong> downed the Pan American Games record in the women’s 200-meter breaststroke this morning.<\/p>\n

Smith threw down a sizzling time of 2:25.41 for the top seed, lower than Caitlin Leverenz’s<\/strong> record time of 2:25.62 from 2007. \u00a0Smith should drop the time even more since she has a 16th-ranked season best of 2:24.87 from the Swedish Grand Prix.<\/p>\n

USA’s Annie Lazor<\/strong> took the second seed with a personal-best time of 2:26.37, while Canada’s Martha McCabe<\/strong> cruised into the third seed in 2:27.47. \u00a0That’s well off her 14th-ranked season-best of 2:24.53 from Canadian Trials.<\/p>\n

Mexico’s Esther Gonzalez<\/strong> (2:28.15) and Byanca Rodriguez<\/strong> (2:28.73) qualified fourth and fifth.<\/p>\n

Jamaica’s Alia Atkinson<\/strong> (2:28.86), Argentina’s Julia Sebastian<\/strong> (2:29.00) and Brazil’s Pamela Souza<\/strong> (2:31.14) made up the rest of the A final.<\/p>\n

Argentina’s Macarena Ceballos<\/strong> (2:31.3%), USA’s Meghan Small<\/strong> (2:32.40), Brazil’s Beatriz Travalon<\/strong> (2:32.73), Venezuela’s Mercedes Toledo<\/strong> (2:34.43), Bahamas’ Laura Morley<\/strong> (2:40.28), Bermuda’s Lisa Blackburn<\/strong> (2:42.82), Peru’s Paula Tamashiro<\/strong> (2:43.73) and Saint Vincent’s Izzy Joachim<\/strong> will swim in the B final with just 16 competitors participating this morning.<\/p>\n

Men’s 200 breast<\/strong><\/p>\n

Colombia’s Jorge Murillo<\/strong> tied the Pan American Games record in the men’s 200-meter breaststroke this morning.<\/p>\n

Murillo clocked a time of 2:11.62 to match the 2:11.62 set by USA’s Sean Mahoney<\/strong> back in 2011. \u00a0That’s a huge Colombian record for Murillo, blasting his previous mark of 2:13.17 from 2014.<\/p>\n

Brazil’s Thiago Simon<\/strong> qualified second in 2:12.05 with Canada’s Richard Funk<\/strong> posting a third-seeded 2:12.22.<\/p>\n

USA’s BJ Johnson<\/strong> (2:12.81), Brazil’s Thiago Pereira<\/strong> (2:12.89), Venezuela’s Carlos Claverie<\/strong> (2:12.97), Mexico’s Miguel De Lara<\/strong> (2:13.79) and Colombia’s Carlos Mahecha<\/strong> (2:14.20) also will swim in the A final.<\/p>\n

USA’s Brad Craig<\/strong> (2:14.31), Mexico’s Miguel Chavez<\/strong> (2:16.07), Canada’s James Dergousoff<\/strong> (2:16.30), Venezuela’s Juan Sequera<\/strong> (2:17.52), Argentina’s Facundo Miguelena<\/strong> (2:17.67), Bahamas’ Dustin Tynes<\/strong> (2:18.13), Argentina’s Rodrigo Frutos<\/strong> (2:19.03) and Aruba’s Jordy Groters<\/strong> (2:20.40) will compete in the consolation heat.<\/p>\n

Women’s 200 back<\/strong><\/p>\n

Team Canada went 1-2 in qualifying in the women’s 200-meter back at the Pan American Games.<\/p>\n

Canada’s Dominique Bouchard<\/strong>, who is ranked 10th in the world with a 2:08.99 from the Orlando stop of the Arena Pro Swim Series, took the top seed today in 2:09.59.<\/p>\n

Hilary Caldwell<\/strong>, ranked 13th in the world with a 2:09.36 from the Swedish Grand Prix, wound up taking the second seed in 2:10.15.<\/p>\n

Team USA went 3-4 with Clara Smiddy<\/strong> (2:11.94) and Kylie Stewart<\/strong> (2:12.30) earning the third and fourth seeds out of qualifying.<\/p>\n

Brazil’s Joanna Maranhao<\/strong> (2:12.35), Guatemala’s Gisela Morales<\/strong> (2:12.38), Argentina’s Andrea Berrino<\/strong> (2:13.62) and Mexico’s Maria Gonzalez<\/strong> (2:14.28) qualified fifth through eighth for the A final.<\/p>\n

Mexico’s Estela Davis<\/strong> (2:16.49), Colombia’s Carolina Colorado<\/strong> (2:16.52), Argentina’s Florencia Perotti<\/strong> (2:17.63), Honduras’ Karen Vilorio<\/strong> (2:18.45), Brazil’s Luiza Vieira<\/strong> (2:20.08), Venezuela’s Carla Gonzalez<\/strong> (2:20.25), Peru’s McKenna De Bever<\/strong> (2:20.67) and Uruguay’s Ines Remersaro<\/strong> (2:21.33) are also set to swim in the B final.<\/p>\n

Just 17 swimmers competed in prelims with Cayman Islands’ Lara Butler<\/strong> finishing 17th in 2:26.43.<\/p>\n

Men’s 200 back<\/strong><\/p>\n

USA’s Sean Lehane<\/strong> lit the pool afire this morning in the men’s 200-meter back to set a Pan American Games mark.<\/p>\n

Lehane stopped the clock with a lifetime best effort of 1:57.11. \u00a0That performance clipped Thiago Pereira’s<\/strong> meet record of 1:57.19 from 2011, and moved Lehane up to 12th in the world rankings.<\/p>\n

That time is a huge personal best for Lehane, well below his 1:59.01 from last summer’s nationals.<\/p>\n

USA’s Carter Griffin<\/strong> posted a second-seeded time of 1:58.54 with Colombia’s Omar Pinzon<\/strong> qualifying third in 1:58.74. \u00a0Venezuela’s Carlos Omana<\/strong> rounded out the sub-2:00 finishers with a fourth-seeded 1:59.81.<\/p>\n

Brazil’s Leonardo De Deus<\/strong> (2:00.80), Paraguay’s Matias Lopez<\/strong> (2:01.05), Canada’s Russell Wood<\/strong> (2:01.28) and Cuba’s Armando Barrera<\/strong> (2:01.33) also earned spots in the A final.<\/p>\n

Colombia’s David Cespedes<\/strong> (2:02.18), Brazil’s Brandonn Almeida<\/strong> (2:02.32), Argentina’s Agustin Hernandez<\/strong> (2:02.76), Puerto Rico’s Yeziel Morales<\/strong> (2:02.89), Mexico’s Ezequiel Trujillo<\/strong> (2:03.51), Argentina’s Felipe Vargas<\/strong> (2:03.82), Mexico’s Andy Song An<\/strong> (2:04.00) and Venezuela’s Jesus Lopez<\/strong> (2:06.21) comprise the B final field.<\/p>\n

Men’s 800 free relay<\/strong><\/p>\n

Team USA had enough firepower to take the top seed in the men’s 800-meter free relay heading into finals.<\/p>\n

Gunnar Bentz<\/strong> (1:49.85), Ryan Feeley<\/strong> (1:49.49), Bobby Bollier<\/strong> (1:50.82) and Darian Townsend<\/strong> (1:49.02) led the way with a top-seeded 7:19.18.<\/p>\n

Canada’s Stefan Milosevic<\/strong> (1:49.84), Yuri Kisil<\/strong> (1:50.05), Ryan Cochrane<\/strong> (1:49.99) and Coleman Allen<\/strong> (1:49.88) qualified second in 7:19.86.<\/p>\n

Brazil could have made much more noise, but decided to swim a breaststroker as its anchor since it was guaranteed a spot in finals.<\/p>\n

Luiz Melo<\/strong> (1:49.22), Henrique Rodrigues<\/strong> (1:49.43), Kaio Almeida<\/strong> (1:52.23) and Thiago Simon<\/strong> (1:58.54) posted a third-seeded 7:29.42.<\/p>\n

Venezuela (7:30.22), Mexico (7:30.34), Argentina (7:39.30) and Peru (8:05.46) will also compete in the finale.<\/p>\n
