One year ago, David Guthrie was dealing with shoulder injuries that resulted in a subpar 2014, at least by his standards. The perennial Masters world record breaker was only able to set one world mark last year, in the 100 breast at the U.S. Masters Swimming nationals.<\/p>\n
Guthrie is now injury-free and back to his multiple record-setting ways. Now 55 years old, he’s making an attack on the 55-59 age group in a big way, lowering his own world records in the long course 100 and 200 breaststrokes.<\/p>\n
At the South Central Zone Masters championships in Shenandoah, Texas, Guthrie got things rolling with a 1:09.37 in the 100 breaststroke, beating the world record of 1:09.75 that he swam in May. Guthrie split 33.18 at 50 meters and finished with a 36.19 split.<\/p>\n
In the 200 breast, Guthrie sizzled with a 2:33.78 to break his two-month-old world record of 2:34.43. Splits: 36.21, 39.22, 39.46, 38.89<\/p>\n
Guthrie went after German Walter Kusch’s world record of 31.05 in the 50 breaststroke, but couldn’t match it with a 31.78. Guthrie did manage to break the USMS record of 32.44, swum by Jack Groselle in 2009.<\/p>\n
Guthrie owns all short course and long course records in the breaststroke events for the 50-54 age group, and is on a quest to do the same in his new age group.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
