GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., March 23. "We are delighted to report that Dewey Newsome, head coach at Grand Valley State University, is showing gradual improvement and is out of danger," CSCAA Executive Director Phil Whitten said this morning on CSCAA.org. <\/p>\n
"Dewey's doctors have begun aggressive treatment and they report that he is responding favorably." <\/p>\n
The 62 year-old swim coach suffered two strokes over the weekend, but was immediately rushed to a local hospital after the firs incident, an action that no doubt was a major factor in his favorable prognosis.<\/p>\n
Friends told the CSCAA that Dewey was able to sit up yesterday an his speech is improving, "He is regaining his strength, and is out of immediate danger," said Sandra Jennings, an administrative assistant for athletics a Grand Valley State.<\/p>\n
Later this morning Newsome will be moved from the Spectrum Butterworth Hospital to Mary Free Bed for rehab. Doctors are certain his ability to walk and function will return fully, or close to it, once rehab has begun. They anticipate rehab will take a few weeks.<\/p>\n
According to friends, Lanna Newsome, Dewey's wife, expressed relief when she was told the good news. She said the Newsome family appreciates the support they've received and thanked people for their thoughts and prayers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
