Men’s 400 IM<\/strong><\/p>\n

Great Britain’s Max Litchfield<\/strong> led the way in the men’s distance medley prelims with a top time of 4:16.72. \u00a0That’s just outside the top 20 in the world currently anchored by Peter Bernek’s<\/strong> 4:16.24 from the Hungarian Open Championships.<\/p>\n

Australia’s Travis Mahoney<\/strong> claimed the second seed into finals with a 4:17.93, while USA’s Jay Litherland<\/strong> qualified third in 4:18.26.<\/p>\n

Japan’s Takeharu Fujimori<\/strong> (4:18.31) and Czech’s Pavel Janecek<\/strong> (4:18.88) also cleared 4:19 to qualify fourth and fifth.<\/p>\n

Fujimori is the top ranked swimmer here in Gwangju with a ninth-ranked 4:13.93 from Japanese Nationals, and should turn up the heat during finals.<\/p>\n

USA’s Josh Prenot<\/strong> (4:19.27), Austria’s Jakub Maly<\/strong> (4:19.88) and Japan’s Keita Sunama<\/strong> (4:20.53) grabbed the final three transfer spots into finals.<\/p>\n

Women’s 400 medley relay<\/strong><\/p>\n

Team USA dominated the preliminary qualifying heats by more than a second.<\/p>\n

Rachel Bootsma<\/strong> (1:00.27), Emma Reaney<\/strong> (1:08.25), Christina Bechtel<\/strong> (59.78) and Abbey Weitzeil<\/strong> (54.73) raced their way to a 4:03.03 for the top seed.<\/p>\n

Japan’s Miki Takahashi<\/strong> (1:02.09), Miku Kanasashi<\/strong> (1:08.49), Rino Hosoda<\/strong> (59.31) and Yui Yamane<\/strong> (54.26) claimed the second seed in 4:04.15.<\/p>\n

Italy’s Arianna Barbieri<\/strong> (1:01.56), Martina Carraro<\/strong> (1:09.30), Elena Di Liddo<\/strong> (58.13) and Aglaia Pezzato<\/strong> (55.52) picked up the third seed in 4:04.51.<\/p>\n

Australia (4:05.10), Russia (4:05.70), New Zealand (4:08.22), Canada (4:08.91) and Germany (4:09.09) will also contend for the gold medal.<\/p>\n

Men’s 400 medley relay<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is going to be a dogfight during finals with a handful of teams all within striking distance of winning the event.<\/p>\n

Russia’s Nikita Ulyanov<\/strong> (54.36), Kirill Prigoda<\/strong> (1:00.55), Aleksandr Sadovnikov<\/strong> (53.23) and Oleg Tikhobaev<\/strong> (49.54) topped prelims with a time of 3:37.68.<\/p>\n

USA’s Jack Conger<\/strong> (55.10), Carsten Vissering<\/strong> (1:01.88), Matt Ellis<\/strong> (53.04) and Michael Wynalda<\/strong> (49.22) qualified second in 3:39.24.<\/p>\n

Australia’s Travis Mahoney<\/strong> (54.86), Nicholas Schafer<\/strong> (1:00.75), Keiran Qaium<\/strong> (53.00) and Jacob Hansford<\/strong> (50.65) snared the third seed in 3:39.26.<\/p>\n

Japan (3:39.88), Poland (3:40.30), France (3:41.16), South Africa (3:41.17) and Great Britain (3:41.23) will also vie for the title.<\/p>\n
