Knapp graduated from Stanford in 1981 with a B.S. in civil engineering. While he was at Stanford he was a freestyle All-American and qualified for the 1980 U.S. Olympic Trials. He was the assistant and associate head men&#8217;s coach for 28 years assisting Stanford to seven NCAA team and 10 runner-up titles. In 2012 he was appointed the head coach position of Stanford.
