Men’s 200 back<\/strong><\/p>\n

In an event that would have benefitted from going straight to finals instead of semis due to just four heats being entered, the top swimmers really didn’t have to do much to guarantee a spot tonight.<\/p>\n

USA’s Jacob Pebley<\/strong> cruised in with the top seed in 1:59.46 with Italy’s Christopher Ciccarese<\/strong> (1:59.58) and USA’s Connor Green<\/strong> (1:59.94) both also undercutting 2:00.<\/p>\n

The trio could take a run at Ryosuke Irie’s<\/strong> meet record of 1:54.13 from 2009 during semis when advancing will be much tougher.<\/p>\n

Great Britain’s Joe Patching<\/strong> (2:00.09), Russia’s Nikita Babchenko<\/strong> (2:00.23), Japan’s Keita Sunama<\/strong> (2:00.26), Italy’s Giorgio Gaetani<\/strong> (2:01.09) and Japan’s Yuma Edo<\/strong> (2:01.20) made up the top eight.<\/p>\n

South Korea’s Taejeong Im<\/strong> (2:01.25), Poland’s Krzysztof Morawski<\/strong> (2:01.30), Sweden’s Axel Pettersson<\/strong> (2:01.44), South Africa’s Martin Binedell<\/strong> (2:01.64), Russia’s Andrei Shabasov<\/strong> (2:02.00), Canada’s Jeremie De Zwirek<\/strong> (2:02.03), Sweden’s Kristian Kron<\/strong> (2:02.34) and Germany’s Max Claussen<\/strong> (2:02.76) qualified ninth through 16th into the semis.<\/p>\n

Women’s 200 free<\/strong><\/p>\n

A day after rocking the 400-meter free meet record<\/a>, USA’s Leah Smith<\/strong> was the only swimmer under 2:00 in the 200 free with a 1:59.43.<\/p>\n

Smith has a lot more in her with a 1:57.57 personal best from last summer, but has a chance at picking up another individual gold medal.<\/p>\n

USA’s Shannon Vreeland<\/strong>, an Olympic gold medalist in her own right, qualified second in 2:00.00. \u00a0Australia’s Ami Matsuo<\/strong> snared the third seed in 2:00.88.<\/p>\n

Germany’s Paulina Schmiedel<\/strong> and Alina Weber<\/strong> tied for fourth seed with matching 2:01.00s, while Japan’s Aya Takano<\/strong> clocked a sixth-seeded 2:01.16.<\/p>\n

Japan’s Yasuko Miyamoto<\/strong> (2:01.23) and Italy’s Martina De Memme<\/strong> (2:01.25) rounded out the top eight.<\/p>\n

Australia’s Ellen Fullerton<\/strong> (2:01.50), China’s Wang Shijia<\/strong> (2:01.85), Canada’s Barbara Rojas-Jardin<\/strong> (2:01.96), Switzerland’s Danielle Villars<\/strong> (2:02.31), South Korea’s Sooyeon Kim<\/strong> (2:02.86), New Zealand’s Georgia Marris<\/strong> (2:03.01), Italy’s Stefania Pirozzi<\/strong> (2:03.86) and Slovakia’s Kataryna Listopadova<\/strong> (2:04.46) will also compete in semis.<\/p>\n

Men’s 100 fly<\/strong><\/p>\n

Brazil’s Henrique Martins<\/strong>, the 50 fly winner on day one, put up the top seed in the men’s 100-meter fly this morning.<\/p>\n

Martins led fifth swimmers under 53 seconds with a 52.57. \u00a0Italy’s Piero Codia<\/strong> touched second in qualifying with a 52.69.<\/p>\n

Team USA’s Matt Ellis<\/strong> and Matt Josa<\/strong> took their matching names to a new level as they matched times with 52.85s in heat 6 to share the third seed.<\/p>\n

Japan’s Masayuki Umemoto<\/strong> (52.98) also cleared 53 seconds in prelims.<\/p>\n

Switzerland’s Nico Van Duijn<\/strong> (53.01), Belarus’ Yauhen Tsurkin<\/strong> (53.05) and Russia’s Evgeny Koptelov<\/strong> (53.10) cruised into the top eight.<\/p>\n

Italy’s Daniele D’Angelo<\/strong> (53.27), Poland’s Michal Poprawa<\/strong> (53.35), Czech’s Jan Sefl<\/strong> (53.48), South Africa’s Nico Mayer<\/strong> (53.49), Australia’s Nicholas Brown<\/strong> (53.50), Russia’s Aleksandr Sadovnikov<\/strong> (53.60), Australia’s Keiran Qaium<\/strong> (53.67) and Great Britain’s Cameron Brodie<\/strong> (53.76) closed out the rest of the semifinal field.<\/p>\n

Women’s 50 back<\/strong><\/p>\n

Rachel Bootsma<\/strong>, the American record holder in the 50 back until Natalie Coughlin<\/strong> took it away last month in Santa Clara, put up a 28.39 for the top seed.<\/p>\n

She will be looking to break Anastasia Zueva’s<\/strong> meet record of 27.89 from 2013 and quite possibly retake the record from Coughlin at 27.51.<\/p>\n

Australia’s Holly Barratt<\/strong> qualified second in 28.43 with USA’s Elizabeth Pelton<\/strong> putting up a third-seeded 28.64.<\/p>\n

France’s Camille Gheorghiu<\/strong> (28.68), South Korea’s Hyounji Yu<\/strong> (28.77), Italy’s Arianna Barbieri<\/strong> (28.81), Kazakhstan’s Yekaterina Rudenko<\/strong> (28.85) and South Africa’s Jessica Ashley-Cooper<\/strong> (28.85) qualified fourth through eighth.<\/p>\n

Canada’s Kylie Masse<\/strong> (28.91), Russia’s Polina Lapshina<\/strong> (28.95), The Netherlands’ Kira Toussaint<\/strong> (28.97), Germany’s Nadine Laemmler<\/strong> (29.08), Hong Kong’s Stephanie Au<\/strong> (29.08), Canada’s Marie-Pier Couillard<\/strong> (29.14), Japan’s Miki Takahashi<\/strong> (29.18) and Hong Kong’s Claudia Lau<\/strong> (29.28) also grabbed spots in semis.<\/p>\n

Men’s 50 breast<\/strong><\/p>\n

Italy’s Andrea Toniato<\/strong> downed the Universiade record in the men’s 50-meter breast at the 2015 World University Games during prelims. \u00a0The time also stands as an Italian record.<\/p>\n

Toniato clocked a top time of 27.06, crushing the rest of the qualifiers, as he erased Kevin Swander’s<\/strong> 2009 mark of 27.14 from the record books. Toniato also vaulted to third in the world rankings.<\/p>\n

Toniato also downed the Italian record of 27.17 set by Fabio Scozzoli<\/strong> at the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai.<\/p>\n

50 Breast World Rankings<\/strong><\/p>\n[table \u201c\u201d not found \/]

Ireland’s Alex Murphy<\/strong> qualified second in 27.49 with Russia’s Kirill Prigoda<\/strong> taking third in 27.58. \u00a0Serbia’s Caba Siladji<\/strong> (27.59), Brazil’s Raphael Rodrigues<\/strong> (27.62), Germany’s Fabian Schwingenshlogl<\/strong> (27.85), Switzerland’s Martin Schweizer<\/strong> (27.88), South Africa’s Marko Visser<\/strong> (27.94) and Italy’s Lorenzo Antonelli<\/strong> (27.94) also made the top nine spots with Visser and Antonelli sharing the eighth-seed.<\/p>\n

Poland’s Dawid Szulich<\/strong> (27.97), Kazakhstan’s Dmitry Balandin<\/strong> (27.98), Latvia’s Nikolai Maskalenko<\/strong> (28.03), Great Britain’s Craig Benson<\/strong> (28.13), USA’s Carsten Vissering<\/strong> (28.17), USA’s DJ MacDonald<\/strong> (28.18) and Czech’s Petr Bartunek<\/strong> (28.21) qualified 10th through 16th.<\/p>\n

Men’s 1500 free<\/strong><\/p>\n

Great Britain’s Jay Lelliott<\/strong> continued his strong World University Games meet with the top seed heading into finals of the 1500 free.<\/p>\n

Lelliott clocked a time of 15:08.47 to better his season best of 15:09.51 and move just outside the top 20 in the world rankings.<\/p>\n

Japan’s Ayatsugu Hirai<\/strong> qualified second with a time of 15:09.01, while Ukraine’s Sergii Frolov<\/strong> put up a third-seeded time of 15:09.34.<\/p>\n

Japan’s Kohei Yamamoto<\/strong> (15:11.50), USA’s Arthur Frayler<\/strong> (15:17.83), Canada’s Jon McKay<\/strong> (15:19.17), Australia’s Jack McLoughlin<\/strong> (15:21.82) and Italy’s Matteo Furlan<\/strong> (15:24.22) also picked up spots in the finale.<\/p>\n
