COLUMBUS, Ohio, March 15. FIVE NCAA records fell on the second day of the NCAA DII Swimming and Diving Championships, while the Drury University men's and women's teams hold onto their first-place standing. <\/p>\n
Women's 200-yard Freestyle Relay<\/b><\/p>\n
Drury kicked off the second day of the meet with a NCAA D-II record. The team of Jing Hua, Janelle Slattery, Eunate Garro and Mariana De Oliveira swam a combined time of 1:33.14 to eclipse the previous record by .35 seconds. <\/p>\n
Indianapolis took home the silver medal when Isabela Tafur, Valerie Crosby, Alison Smith and Holly Spohr touched in at 1:34.86. North Dakota rounded out the top three with a time of 1:35.45. <\/p>\n
Men's 200-yard Freestyle Relay<\/b><\/p>\n
On the men's side, North Dakota posted the second NCAA record of the night when the squad of Anthony Buhr, Eric Knight, Pedro Pereira and Per Westergren swam two seconds faster than their preliminary time to finish in 1:20.69. Pereira (19.82) clocked the fastest split of the evening, followed by teammate Knight who split 19.91. <\/p>\n
The UC-San Diego team of Dan Perdew, Todd Langland, Evan Hsiao and Tim Fuller hit the wall in 1:22.49 for second place. Clarion completed the medal positions in a time of 1:22.92. <\/p>\n
Women's 400-yard Individual Medley<\/b><\/p>\n
Cara Fadel gave Drury its second title of the night with a victory in the 400-yard individual medley. Taking the race a second faster than any other swimmer, the senior dropped eight seconds from her preliminary time to outdistance the competition by six second with a winning time of 4:21.80. <\/p>\n
Seniors continued to dominate the event, as Susan Bell of UC-San Diego and Truman State's Lija Kaleps finished second and third, respectively. Bell turned in a time of 4:27.69 to out touch Kaleps, who completed the race in 4:28.00.<\/p>\n
Men's 400-yard Individual Medley<\/b><\/p>\n
Drury claimed the top three places in the 400-yard individual medley led by Tomas Kuzvard. Seeded second heading into the final heat, Kuzvard shaved eight seconds off his prelim time for the gold medal. He hit the wall first in 3:51.21. <\/p>\n
Teammate Kyrillo Fesenko followed, posting the second-fastest time of 3:53.82. Rookie Panther Kurtis MacGillivary took third in 3:55.22. <\/p>\n
Women's 100-yard Butterfly<\/b><\/p>\n
Swimming the sprint fly race for the final time in her college career, Kathrin Dumitru of West Chester went out on top. Hitting the 50-yard mark more than a second ahead of the heat, Dumitru turned in the fastest time of 54.66. <\/p>\n
Drury's Janelle Slattery was the runner-up with 55.53. Valerie Crosby of Indianapolis stopped the clock at 56.55 for third place. <\/p>\n
Men's 100-yard Butterfly<\/b><\/p>\n
Drury continued its winning streak into the 100-yard butterfly. Yiwen Huang bolted to the lead, splitting 22.65 at the 50-yard mark, then turning to bring it home in 25.21. His final time of 47.86 defeated the competition by more than a second. <\/p>\n
Travis Stensby of University of Missouri-Rolla edged Bruno Blanco for the silver in a time of 49.06. Blanco swam the race in 49.12. <\/p>\n
Women's 200-yard Freestyle<\/b><\/p>\n
With just one second separating the top six finishers, Tampa's Jessie Bardin pulled out the win in 1:51.93. Truman State's Molly Polette, behind at the 100 swam, the fastest second-half to take home the silver for Truman in 1:52.17. Juang Hua picked up Drury's eighth medal of the night when she recorded the third fastest time of 1:52.29. <\/p>\n
Men's 200-yard Freestyle<\/b><\/p>\n
A race for the rookies, freshmen were responsible for the top four times in the 200-yard freestyle. Gus Chagas (Wingate) led the group the entire way, garnering the win by just .15 in 1:39.70. Ouachita's Radu Badalac, who paced Chagas yard-for-yard, finished next in 1:38.85. Close behind, North Dakota's Daniel Moraes completed the medals in 1:39.16. <\/p>\n
Women's 1-meter Diving<\/b><\/p>\n
Clarion captured the top two places on the 1-meter board. Senior Jamie Wolf earned the title in NCAA record score of 453.75. The score was 92.95 points higher than any other diver. Teammate Ginny Saras dove a score of 360.80 to grab second place by just three-tenths of a point. Jill Smolczyk posted the third-highest score of 360.50. <\/p>\n
Women's 400-yard Medley Relay<\/b><\/p>\n
Drury won its second relay of the night when the quad of Cara Fadel, Juan You Zaio, Eunate Garro and Mariana De Oliveira completed the race in another NCAA record time of 3:47.27. <\/p>\n
West Chester's team of Jackie Borkowski, Kathrin Dumitru, Kori Kilfeather and Kate Jones came in next with 3:49.81. UC-San Diego swam to a bronze medal in a time of 3:51.18. <\/p>\n
Men's 400-yard Medley Relay<\/b><\/p>\n
North Dakota earned its second relay title of the night in when the team of Rodrigo Ferreira, Pedro Pereira, Dan Zabler and Eric Knight posted the team's second NCAA record of 3:17.50 for the night. <\/p>\n
Ethan Weiss, Artem Sludnov, Yiwn Huang and Ismeal Ortiz came in second at 3:18.56 for Drury. Wayne State clocked a time of 3:19.86 for third place.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
