Three years ago, Student-Athlete Development intern Kaela Anderson<\/strong> made a small decision that ended up having a big impact on her life \u2013 and changed the life of someone else.<\/p>\n

During her years as a Gopher swimmer, Anderson volunteered at the annual HopeDay Festival \u2013 an event similar to a mini state fair, put on by Gopher student athletes and HopeKids, a nonprofit organization that provides events for children with cancer and life-threatening medical conditions.<\/p>\n

Each year, a group from Be a Donor, Become and Hero, attends the festival to help add students and families to the registry. The group works in conjunction with Be the Match, who manages the largest bone marrow registry in the world.<\/p>\n

And with a simple cheek swab, Anderson made the decision to save a life.<\/p>\n

The odds of being selected are very low \u2013 only one in 540 registered donors will go on to donate.<\/p>\n

But Anderson marks the fourth Gopher to donate through Be The Match, following Brian Peterson<\/strong> (wrestling), Jordan Jess<\/strong> (baseball), and TJ Oakes<\/strong> (baseball) who donated to dad Todd Oakes<\/strong>, Gopher pitching coach.<\/p>\n

It took three years for Anderson to get the life-changing call.<\/p>\n

\u201cI signed up thinking, \u2018I probably won\u2019t get chosen,\u2019 but turns out it happened and I was very excited,\u201d Anderson said.<\/p>\n

There are two ways a donor can provide bone marrow \u2013 by peripheral blood stem cell (PBSC) donation, and bone marrow surgery.<\/p>\n

Most of the time, the less invasive PBSC is performed, but Anderson underwent surgery.<\/p>\n

\u201cSince my patient was younger, they decided the actual bone marrow would work better,\u201d Anderson said.<\/p>\n

Anderson was unconscious while doctors made two incisions on her pelvic bone, taking out almost a liter of bone marrow.<\/p>\n

But the pain was worth it to Anderson.<\/p>\n

\u201cHonestly, it wasn\u2019t really that much pain for the cost of saving a life,\u201d Anderson said. \u201cAnd I would do it again if I had to\u00a0tomorrow<\/span><\/span>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now fully recovered from her procedure earlier in June, she\u2019s planning this year\u2019s HopeDay Festival.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think this year I\u2019m gonna do a little speech at the HopeDay Festival to get [student-athletes] excited to get signed up [for the registry],\u201d Anderson said. \u201cIt\u2019s a really cool experience if you get chosen to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now that her procedure is over, she can contact her patient through anonymous letters for a year.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter the full year, if my patient is doing okay, they can choose to open up conversation,\u201d Anderson said. \u201cBe The Match actually covers flights, hotels, things to get you guys to meet. So hopefully that will be happening in the near future.\u201d<\/p>\n

The two have already started corresponding, and Anderson recently sent her patient a gift to make her hospital room feel more like home.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just so cool to be apart of something bigger than you,\u201d Anderson said. \u201cI never thought that I\u2019d be chosen to do this and I\u2019m so happy that I was.\u201d<\/p>\n
