THE Division II Men's and Women's Championships got under way Wednesday with Drury grabbing first place in both team races. The Drury men scored 152 points to the 118 managed by North Dakota. As for the women, their competition is a little tighter, as Drury holds a 127-123 edge over Truman State. A pair of medley relay records were also set on the first night.

On the female side, Drury was paced by Cara Fadel's victory in the 1,000-yard freestyle. The senior covered the event in 10:05.23 to secure a four-plus second decision over Wayne State's Ashley St. Andrew (10:09.98). The Drury women also went short on the opening night of action as Jing Hua captured the 50 free in 23.32, ahead of teammates Eunate Garro (23.38) and Mariana De Oliveira (23.41).

Drury added a win in the 200 medley relay when the foursome of Janelle Slattery, Kristie Rose, De Oliveira and Garro produced a swim of 1:43.73. That time equaled Truman State's division record from 2003. West Chester's Kathrin Dumitru was the victor in the 200 individual medley, thanks to a mark of 2:02.77. A 1996 Olympian for Germany, Dumitru defeated Ouachita's Sarah Watson (2:05.55).

In the men's competition, Drury dominated at the top, led by Kurtis MacGillivary's triumph in the 1,000 free. The Canadian was clocked in 9:03.34, significantly quicker than the second-place showing of teammate Mitch Snyder (9:22.73). In the men's 200 I.M., Drury took another win when Tomas Kuzvard touched the wall in 1:47.82, not far off the Division II record of Kurt Boehm (1:47.48).

Ashland's Omar Fathallah was the winner of the 50 free as his 20.30 performance held off North Dakota's Rodrigo Ferreira, second in 20.32. Clarion's Adley Kilgore was third in 20.36. Ferreira, though, claimed gold as the leadoff leg on the record-setting 200 medley relay for North Dakota. He was joined by Pedro Pereira, Per Westergren and Eric Knight for a time of 1:29.86, well under the former divisional standard of 1:30.27, set in 1991 by Oakland.

BUFFALO, New York, March 15.
