Men’s 800 free<\/strong><\/p>\n

Great Britain’s Jay Lelliott<\/strong> torched the rest of the preliminary heats with a strong time of 7:55.81 as far and away the best swim of the morning.<\/p>\n

That time is only a few seconds back of the top 10 in the world currently anchored by Yosuke Miyamoto<\/strong> with a 7:53.05. Lelliott will need to drop some serious time to challenge the meet record held by Chad LaTourette<\/strong> with a 7:47.24 from 2009.<\/p>\n

USA’s Janardan Burns<\/strong> broke 8:01 for the first time in his career with a strong 7:59.06 for the second seed, while Ukraine’s Sergii Frolov<\/strong> claimed third in prelims with a 7:59.88 to round out the sub-8:00 performers.<\/p>\n

Japan’s Ayatsugu Hirai<\/strong> (8:00.69), USA’s Arthur Frayler<\/strong> (8:00.93), Australia’s Jack McLoughlin<\/strong> (8:01.21), Australia’s Jordan Harrison<\/strong> (8:01.30) and Japan’s Kohei Yamamoto<\/strong> (8:03.69) also made tomorrow’s finale.<\/p>\n

Women’s 50 fly<\/strong><\/p>\n

There could be a new Universiade record in the women’s 50-meter fly with the semifinalists assembled out of prelims this morning.<\/p>\n

Aleksandra Gerasimenya’s<\/strong> 2013 time of 25.84 could be under duress as Australia’s Holly Barratt<\/strong> led the way with a 26.54. \u00a0China’s Lu Ying<\/strong> (26.55) and Russia’s Svetlana Chimrova<\/strong> (26.66) qualified second and third.<\/p>\n

Canada’s Samantha Corea<\/strong> (26.68), USA’s Felicia Lee<\/strong> (26.76), Slovakia’s Katarina Listopadova<\/strong> (26.77), Russia’s Alina Kashinskaya<\/strong> (26.89) and Italy’s Elena Di Liddo<\/strong> (26.94) all cleared 27 seconds for the top eight.<\/p>\n

Ukraine’s Nadiia Koba<\/strong> (27.02), Ukraine’s Darya Stepanyuk<\/strong> (27.09), USA’s Christina Bechtel<\/strong> (27.09), New Zealand’s Laura Quilter<\/strong> (27.12), South Africa’s Jessica Ashley-Cooper<\/strong> (27.16), Japan’s Rino Hosoda<\/strong> (27.30), Ireland’s Shauna O’Brien<\/strong> (27.40) and South Africa’s Marne Erasmus<\/strong> (27.41) also made semis.<\/p>\n

Men’s 100 back<\/strong><\/p>\n

Japan’s Junya Hasegawa<\/strong> will look to give Japan some better news today after his compatriot Kosuke Hagino had to withdraw from the World Championships with a broken right elbow today<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Hasegawa, already 20th in the world with a 54.00 from Japanese Nationals, led prelims with a time of 54.27.<\/p>\n

USA’s Jack Conger<\/strong> hit the wall second in prelims with a time of 54.86, while Italy’s Christopher Ciccarese<\/strong> earned the third seed in 54.98. \u00a0That trio will have a hard time tracking down Ryosuke Irie’s<\/strong> meet record of 52.60 from 2009, but could challenge for the top 10 in the world currently held by Camille Lacourt<\/strong> with a 53.60.<\/p>\n

USA’s Jacob Pebley<\/strong> (55.17), Japan’s Yuma Edo<\/strong> (55.26), Italy’s Matteo Milli<\/strong> (55.49), Great Britain’s Joe Patching<\/strong> (55.50) and Russia’s Andrei Shabasov<\/strong> (55.76) made the top eight.<\/p>\n

South Korea’s Seonkwan Park<\/strong> (55.82), France’s Eddie Moueddene<\/strong> (55.83), Germany’s Felix Wolf<\/strong> (56.06), Poland’s Krzysztof Morawski<\/strong> (56.09), Russia’s Nikita Ulyanov<\/strong> (56.11), Germany’s Max Claussen<\/strong> (56.33), Canada’s Jeremie De Zwirek<\/strong> (56.34) and Sweden’s Axel Pettersson<\/strong> (56.35) also claimed spots in semis.<\/p>\n

Women’s 400 IM<\/strong><\/p>\n

USA’s Sarah Henry<\/strong> unloaded a personal best in the distance medley to lead preliminary qualifying.<\/p>\n

Henry turned in a 4:39.62 to lead the way in prelims and take 18th in the world rankings. \u00a0That her first time under 4:40 ever, clearing her previous best of 4:40.72 from the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials.<\/p>\n

If Henry can summon a truly transcendent swim during finals, she might be able to take down Yana Klochkova’s<\/strong> 2007 meet record of 4:37.50.<\/p>\n

Czech’s Barbora Zavadova<\/strong> (4:41.40) and USA’s Hali Flickinger<\/strong> (4:41.48) qualified second and third as they pushed each other to the limit in heat 3.<\/p>\n

Australia’s Ellen Fullerton<\/strong> (4:42.22), Italy’s Luisa Trombetti<\/strong> (4:42.45), Italy’s Stefania Pirozzi<\/strong> (4:43.77), South Korea’s Seoyeong Kim<\/strong> (4:44.86) and China’s Li Xuanxu<\/strong> (4:46.05) will also vie for the championship title tonight.<\/p>\n

Men’s 100 breast<\/strong><\/p>\n

Great Britain’s Craig Benson<\/strong> nearly moved into the top 20 in the world with a top time in the 100-meter breast.<\/p>\n

Benson clocked a 1:00.46 for the top seed, just off Richard Funk’s<\/strong> 20th-ranked 1:00.44 from Canadian Trials. \u00a0He’ll need a big drop to contend with Igor Borysik’s<\/strong> meet record of 59.53 from 2009.<\/p>\n

Australia’s Nicholas Schafer<\/strong> finished second in prelims with a time of 1:00.90, while Russia’s Oleg Kostin<\/strong> also cleared 1:01 with a third-seeded 1:00.91.<\/p>\n

Great Britain’s Jay Wilby<\/strong> (1:01.10), Serbia’s Caba Siladji<\/strong> (1:01.15), Italy’s Andrea Toniato<\/strong> (1:01.26), Japan’s Kazuki Kohinata<\/strong> (1:01.32) and Kazakhstan’s Dmitry Balandin<\/strong> (1:01.48) claimed the top eight spots into semis.<\/p>\n

Slovakia’s Tomas Klobucnik<\/strong> (1:01.60), Italy’s Lorenzo Antonelli<\/strong> (1:01.61), Germany’s Fabian Schwingenshlogl<\/strong> (1:01.74), USA’s Daniel MacDonald <\/strong>(1:01.79), Russia’s Anton Lobanov<\/strong> (1:01.82), Ireland’s Nicholas<\/strong> Quinn<\/strong> (1:01.84), Ukraine’s Dmytro<\/strong> Oseledets<\/strong> (1:01.95) and Japan’s Akihiro<\/strong> Yamaguchi<\/strong> (1:01.97) will also contend for finals spots in semis.<\/p>\n

Women’s 200 back<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lisa<\/strong> Bratton<\/strong> led a United States 1-3 in prelims with a 2:11.97. \u00a0Melanie<\/strong> Klaren<\/strong> claimed the third seed in the 200 back with a time of 2:12.10.<\/p>\n

Bratton just clipped Japan’s Yuka<\/strong> Kawayoke<\/strong> for the top seed as Kawayoke qualified second in 2:11.98.<\/p>\n

The top trio definitely have a lot of time to drop to catch Stephanie<\/strong> Proud’s<\/strong> 2009 meet record of 2:08.91.<\/p>\n

Canada’s Genevieve<\/strong> Cantin<\/strong> (2:12.87), Japan’s Niki<\/strong> Takahashi<\/strong> (2:12.19), Canada’s Barbara<\/strong> Rojas<\/strong>–Jardin<\/strong> (2:13.79), Czech’s Simona<\/strong> Baumrtova<\/strong> (2:13.95) and France’s Camille<\/strong> Gheorghiu<\/strong> (2:14.02) also made the top eight into semis.<\/p>\n

Italy’s Carlotta<\/strong> Zofkova<\/strong> (2:14.51), Australia’s Hayley<\/strong> White<\/strong> (2:14.59), Hong Kong’s Stephanie<\/strong> Au<\/strong> (2:15.09), Russia’s Anastasia<\/strong> Klyarovskaya<\/strong> (2:15.22), Hong Kong’s Claudia<\/strong> Lau<\/strong> (2:15.23), Germany’s Nadine Laemmler<\/strong> (2:15.56), New Zealand’s Kate<\/strong> Godfrey<\/strong> (2:15.74) and Russia’s Alexandra<\/strong> Papusha<\/strong> (2:16.25) earned the other transfer spots into semis.<\/p>\n

Men’s 50 fly<\/strong><\/p>\n

Brazil’s Henrique<\/strong> Martins<\/strong> matched his ninth-ranked season best in the men’s 50-meter fly with a strong 23.38 for the top swim of the morning. \u00a0Previously, he clocked that time at the Maria Lenk Trophy meet in Rio de Janeiro.<\/p>\n

Martins could make a run at Jason<\/strong> Dunford’s<\/strong> 2009 meet record of 23.09 during semis this evening.<\/p>\n

Italy’s Piero<\/strong> Codia<\/strong> (23.70), Belarus’ Yauhen<\/strong> Tsurkin<\/strong> (23.71), Russia’s Oleg<\/strong> Kostin<\/strong> (23.89), Russia’s Aleksandr<\/strong> Sadovnikov<\/strong> (23.91) and USA’s Matt<\/strong> Josa<\/strong> (23.95) also cleared 24 seconds to make semis.<\/p>\n

China’s Shi<\/strong> Yang<\/strong> (24.05) and USA’s Andrew<\/strong> Seliskar<\/strong> (24.05) tied for the seventh seed to round out the top eight.<\/p>\n

Italy’s Marco Belotti <\/strong>(24.20), Japan’s Junya<\/strong> Hasegawa<\/strong> (24.26), South Korea’s Haneol Kwon <\/strong>(24.36), Czech’s Jan<\/strong> Sefl<\/strong> (24.39), South Africa’s Nico<\/strong> Mayer<\/strong> (24.43), France’s Yonel<\/strong> Govindin<\/strong> (24.46), Poland’s Michal<\/strong> Poprawa<\/strong> (24.53) and Indonesia’s Glenn<\/strong> Sutanto<\/strong> (24.53) will also try for finals spots during semis.<\/p>\n

Women’s 400 free relay<\/strong><\/p>\n

Based on unofficial results, Team USA smoked the rest of the teams in prelims with a 3:40.04. The relay was made up by Lia Neal<\/strong> (55.00), Madeline Locus<\/strong> (54.71), Elizabeth Pelton<\/strong> (55.07) and Felicia Lee<\/strong> (55.26).<\/p>\n

Russia’s Polina<\/strong> Lapshina<\/strong> (55.76), Rozaliya<\/strong> Nasretdinova<\/strong> (56.74), Margarita<\/strong> Nesterova<\/strong> (54.91) and Elizaveta<\/strong> Bazarova<\/strong> (56.14) qualified second in 3:43.55. \u00a0Japan’s Yui<\/strong> Yamane<\/strong> (55.87), Yasuko<\/strong> Miyamoto<\/strong> (55.65), Aya<\/strong> Sato<\/strong> (56.16) and Mari Sumiyoshi<\/strong> (55.93) earned the third seed in 3:43.61.<\/p>\n

Italy (3:44.25), China (3:44.61), Australia (3:44.75), Canada (3:45.58) and Sweden (3:46.06) also made finals.<\/p>\n

Men’s 400 free relay<\/strong><\/p>\n

Team USA’s Paul<\/strong> Powers<\/strong> (50.13), Michael<\/strong> Wynalda<\/strong> (48.71), Clay<\/strong> Youngquist<\/strong> (49.74) and John<\/strong> Murray<\/strong> (49.21) put up a time of 3:17.79 to lead the rest of the field by nearly two seconds.<\/p>\n

Japan’s Reo<\/strong> Sakata<\/strong> (49.71), Kosuke<\/strong> Matsui<\/strong> (50.42), Takumi<\/strong> Komatsu<\/strong> (49.55) and Toru Maruyama<\/strong> (49.98) qualified second in 3:19.66 with Australia’s Travis<\/strong> Mahoney<\/strong> (49.95), Jacob<\/strong> Hansford<\/strong> (50.21), Justin<\/strong> James<\/strong> (48.79) and Jack McLoughlin<\/strong> (50.86) snaring the third seed in 3:19.81.<\/p>\n

Russia (3:20.68), Italy (3:20.97), Turkey (3:21.96), South Africa (3:22.26) and Belarus (3:22.34) also made finals.<\/p>\n
