COLUMBUS, Ohio, March 8. KENYON College dominated the first day of the Women's Swimming and Diving Division III NCAA Championships. The Ladies won four of the six events contended to compile a score of 190. Amherst College follows in second place with 105 points, while Calvin College sits in third with 104. <\/p>\n
200-yard Freestyle Relay<\/b>
\nThe Kenyon Ladies opened the meet with a victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The team swam a combined 1:33.08, with Elizabeth Carlton swimming the second leg in 22.72 to clock the fastest split in the event. Calvin was the runner-up in 1:34.07, while Emory rounded out the Top 3 in 1:35.48. <\/p>\n
500-yard Freestyle<\/b>
\nKenyon dominated the mid-distance event, with four women in the final heat. The Ladies again topped the podium when freshman Danielle Arad moved from second place into first with a time of 4:56.56. The event was an even race at the 200-yard mark, as the Top 3 finishers flipped at 1:57. Arad captured the title when she pulled away from her competition in the last 100 yards. <\/p>\n
Kelly Kono of Washington took home the silver in 4:58.17 when she edged Leigh Psaris of Emory. Psaris, who was the top qualifier this morning, finished in the bronze-medal position with 4:59.41. <\/p>\n
200-yard Individual Medley<\/b>
\nIn the race for the gold, Kaitlyn Orstein held onto her first-place seed to earn the title in 2:03.13. Orstein had control of the race until the final 50 yards when Amherst's Brittany Sasser came back in 28.68. Sasser completed the race in 2:03.78 and took home the silver. <\/p>\n
Kenyon earned its third medal of the night when freshman Tina Ertel hit the wall .01 seconds ahead of fourth-place finisher Meredith Nordbrock for third place. Ertel's time was 2:05.12. <\/p>\n
50-yard Freestyle<\/b>
\nReturning Kenyon to the gold-medal position, Elizabeth Carlton swam 50-yard of freestyle faster than anyone else for the second time of the finals competition. The sophomore posted a time of 23.15. <\/p>\n
Seniors Becky Weima and Michelle Coombs were responsible for the remaining medal positions. Weima swam the sprint in 23.38 to finish as the runner-up, while Coombs touched in one-tenth later at 23.46 for third. <\/p>\n
400-yard Medley Relay<\/b>
\nContinuing its winning streak into the final swimming event of the evening, Kenyon captured its fourth title of the meet in the 400-yard medley relay. The team of Carolyn Barer, Jessica Connors, Tina Ertel and Elizabeth Carlton swam improved their preliminary time by five seconds to 3:48.39 for the win. <\/p>\n
Amherst picked up its first medal of the night when the women recorded the second-fastest time of 3:49.19. Denison followed in third with 3:51.79. <\/p>\n
One-meter Diving<\/b>
\nErica Deur of Calvin garnered a first-place finish on the 1-meter diving when she scored 17 more points than her competition to win in 487.00.
