{"id":140869,"date":"2015-07-01T09:07:05","date_gmt":"2015-07-01T16:07:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=140869"},"modified":"2015-07-01T09:07:05","modified_gmt":"2015-07-01T16:07:05","slug":"missy-franklin-leads-810-cscaa-scholar-all-americans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/missy-franklin-leads-810-cscaa-scholar-all-americans\/","title":{"rendered":"Missy Franklin Leads 810 CSCAA Scholar All-Americans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) has selected a record 810 swimmers and divers to its Scholar All-America team, highlighted by CSCAA Swimmers-of-the-Year <strong>Missy Franklin<\/strong> and <strong>Ryan Murphy<\/strong> from California, <strong>Sarah Thompson<\/strong> (Williams) and <strong>Andrew Wilson<\/strong> (Emory).<\/p>\n<p>A complete list from all 284 teams can be found <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/cscaa-announces-2015-scholar-all-america-teams\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an honor to be selected to the CSCAA Scholar All-America team,\u201d Missy Franklin said. \u201cI\u2019m lucky to be at a University that celebrates success in the pool and also in the classroom as UC Berkeley is extremely supportive of promoting a positive scholar-athlete atmosphere on campus.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>An additional 1,078 swimmers and divers were recognized as Honorable-Mention selections.\u00a0Student athletes were designated based on their performance in the classroom and the pool. In total 284, institutions placed at least one swimmer or diver on the either the first team or Honorable Mention lists.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSwimmers and divers truly embody the student-athlete ethos and are well-known for earning some of the highest GPAs on campus,\u201d said CSCAA executive director <strong>Joel Shinofield<\/strong>. \u201cWith nearly half of all national championship qualifiers producing GPA\u2019s higher than 3.50, you see swimming and diving adds so much to value to a campus community. These accomplishments are impressive and a sign of the success they will carry on through life, positively representing their schools along the way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To be selected to the CSCAA Scholar All-America Team, swimmers and divers must have achieved a grade point average of 3.50 or higher and have participated in their respective NCAA\/NAIA\/NJCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. Honorable Mention selections have similarly achieved a GPA of 3.50 and achieved a &#8220;B&#8221; time standard or competed at their respective qualifying meets.<\/p>\n<p>The selections were drawn from 284 colleges and universities, up from 243 in 2014. That, Shinofield explains, illustrates the widespread contributions of swimming and diving. \u201cThis really shows that success isn\u2019t limited to the \u2018traditional\u2019 powers.
