COLUMBUS, Ohio, March 6. THE swimming at the 2007 Speedo CA-NV Spring Sectionals concluded Sunday with athletes reminding us that college is not the only place to get a healthy dose of fast swimming. <\/p>\n
Scott Clary of Fast Swimming proved why he was chosen for the 2007 Junior National Team when he hit the wall first in three events, as well as anchoring to victorious relays. In addition to his wins, Clary was the runner-up in two events. <\/p>\n
He began his successful weekend Thursday when he stopped the clock just one second off Olympian Aaron Piersol's sectional record in the 200-yard backstroke. Clary swam the event in 1:44.95. He then came back on Friday to not only win two events, but to win the events back-to-back. Clary posted a 1:39.13 in the 200-yard freestyle. He then swam a 3:52.23 in the 400-yard individual medley to finish six seconds ahead of the competition. Clary concluded the evening by helping teammates earn the 800-yard freestyle relay title. He split the race in 1:38.39 to better his finals time. <\/p>\n
However, Clary was not the only swimmer to record multiple wins. Yumi So, 15, of Swim Pasadena surpassed her competitors in both the 200-yard butterfly and 100-yard backstroke. So posted a time of 1:58.60 in the butterfly event and 63.34 in the backstroke. <\/p>\n
Terrapin Kate Dwelley demonstrated her skills in all four strokes when she reported the fastest times in both medley events. Her first win came in the 400-yard individual medley, swimming the event in 4:12.60. She followed the gold-medal performance with a winning time of 2:00.42 in the shorter medley distance. But Dwelley did not stop there. She carried her speed into the 100-yard butterfly, winning in 54.10. <\/p>\n
Dwelley's teammate, Kasey Carlson, captured a pair of wins. Carlson swam the 200-yard breaststroke three seconds faster than anyone else to take the event in 2:14.01. Continuing her winning streak in the breaststroke department, the 15-year-old concluded the five-day meet with an impressive 1:02.27 in the 100-yard distance. <\/p>\n
Mission Viejo exhibited its endurance power when Sachiko Yamada and Chad La Tourette each earned two individual titles in front of a home crowd. As distance-queen of the meet, Yamada recorded times of 4:43.64 and 16:11.92 in the 500- and 1,650-yard freestyle, respectively. La Tourette followed the example of his teammate, with winning times of 4:21.67 and 14:50.48. His time in the mile erased the record of Mission Viejo's Justin Mortimer by 14 seconds. <\/p>\n
Pirate Karlee Bispo also set a meet record. She swam the 100-yard freestyle in 50.03 to erase Gabrielle Rose's five-year old record. Liv Jensen of Palo Alto extended the sprint-record breaking trend, swimming the 50-yard freestyle in 23.01.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
