A group of Gophers spent the weekend competing at the 2015 TYR Fran Crippen Swim Meet of Champions in Mission Viejo, California. Minnesota has strong ties with the meet host Mission Viejo Nadadores. It is the club team for current Gophers\u00a0Brooke Lorentzen<\/a>,\u00a0Logan Redondo<\/a>\u00a0and incoming freshman\u00a0Erik Hunter<\/a>, and before joining the Minnesota staff in 1998, current Minnesota\u00a0head coach Kelly Kremer<\/strong> was a coach for the Nadadores.<\/p>\n

The meet was headlined by incoming freshman\u00a0Erin Emery<\/a>\u00a0collecting two first-place finishes, including an 8:42.26 in the 800-meter freestyle and 16:46.34 in the 1500-meter free. Emery also finished fourth in the 400-meter free (4:17.91), 11th in the 400-meter IM (4:57.71), 18th in the 200-meter free (2:03.44).<\/p>\n

Emery\u2019s club teammate and Gopher teammate\u00a0Bowe Becker<\/a>\u00a0finished 23rd in the 50-meter free with a time of 24.51.<\/p>\n

Breanne Siwicki<\/a>\u00a0finished 5th in the 1500-meter free with a 17:15.08 and 17th in the 400-meter IM with a time of 4:56.89.<\/p>\n

Noah Busch<\/a>\u00a0placed 11th in the 50-meter free (23.72), 18th in the 100-meter free with a time of 52.13.<\/p>\n

Danielle Nack<\/a>\u00a0finished 9th in the 200-meter fly with a 2:15.18, 17th in the 200-meter free (2:03.24), 12th in the 50-meter free (26.76).<\/p>\n

Eric Sande<\/a>\u00a0finished 18th in the 100-meter breast with a time of 1:05.31.<\/p>\n

Recent Minnesota alum\u00a0CJ Smith<\/a>\u00a0was also in attendance. He finished sixth both the in the 1500-meter free (15:39.44) and 400-meter free (3:59.00) and seventh in the 800-meter free (8:16.12).<\/p>\n

Junior\u00a0Ian Gordon<\/a>\u00a0and 2015 alum\u00a0Chris Johnson<\/a>\u00a0competed at a swim meet in Darmstadt, Germany this weekend.<\/p>\n

\u201cFormer Gopher\u00a0Chris Johnson<\/a>\u00a0and I have been spending the summer abroad in Germany, Chris in Munich and myself in the capital city of Berlin. When we aren’t studying, working, or getting yelled at by angry Germans, we are both putting great work into training and competing.<\/p>\n

On Friday, I took the train cross-country and met Chris in the little city of Darmstadt, where we competed in the 52nd International Merk Super Pokal swim meet. It turned out to be a great weekend with strong swims against very diverse competition.<\/p>\n

As this was my first international meet, I was very excited to compete. The first night there, I met swimmers from all over the world, including the England, Kuwait, and some very speedy Australians. That night, after a short German lesson from Chris on swim meet vocabulary, we were ready to race!<\/p>\n

Chris started out the meet with the 50-meter backstroke. Every 50-meter completion at the Merk Super Pokal had a prelims, semi-finals, and finals component. Chris swam in each of these and eventually placed 2nd in the 50-meter backstroke with a time of 27.52. He also competed in the 200 IM and as well as the 100 and 200-meter backstrokes, both of which he swam again in finals. He finished the 100 meter backstroke with a time of 59.03 and placed first. His 200-meter backstroke was also a very well swum race, as he placed second with a time of 2:07.81, which is in my opinion a very respectable mid-season swim.<\/p>\n

I swam the 50 and the 100-meter freestyle. The prelims, semi-finals, finals format was a new experience for me, particularly since prelims and semi-finals took place on the same night. After a rough start, I finished in second with a time of 24.64 in the 50 free. I’d rather not talk about the 100.<\/p>\n

Overall, the meet was a great time! It was nice to see Chris again, I had a blast being able to compete, and I even got to try out my German on some unsuspecting natives! The meet in Darmstadt this weekend certainly helped me learn the format of international swim meets and brought Chris and I one step closer to our end of year completion in Barcelona!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
