{"id":140603,"date":"2015-06-29T08:19:18","date_gmt":"2015-06-29T15:19:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=140603"},"modified":"2015-07-28T18:07:48","modified_gmt":"2015-07-29T01:07:48","slug":"yannick-agnel-withdraws-from-world-championships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/yannick-agnel-withdraws-from-world-championships\/","title":{"rendered":"Yannick Agnel Withdraws From World Championships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Citing health issues, Olympic gold medalist <strong>Yannick Agnel<\/strong> of France has elected to withdraw from the 2015 World Championships in Kazan, Russia.<\/p>\n<p>According to <em>L&#8217;Equipe<\/em>, Agnel suffered a bout with pleurisy that kept him from standard training for nearly a month.<\/p>\n<p>With this huge gap in training, Agnel has decided to pull out of Worlds and refocus his training for the 2016 Olympic Games. \u00a0He will be back in the pool in mid-August.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I&#8217;m disappointed not to be able to defend my world title after a good start this year, especially with great training in Font-Romeau in May,&#8221; Agnel told <em>L&#8217;Equipe<\/em>. &#8220;The Olympics remain my goal. \u00a0I know that it is better to play it safe since I already had pneumonia in 2011. \u00a0I prefer to fully recover this summer instead of expending considerable energy to prepare for the World Championships in conditions that are far from optimal.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is the second defending champion to pull out of Worlds with 100-meter free titlist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/james-magnussen-to-have-shoulder-surgery-will-miss-world-championships\/\" target=\"_blank\">James Magnussen withdrawing last month<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Agnel was the defending champion in the 200-meter free, and looked to have a huge chance to successfully defend his title with <strong>Tae Hwan Park<\/strong> also missing Worlds due to a doping suspension.<\/p>\n<p>For more details, read the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lequipe.fr\/Natation\/Actualites\/Yannick-agnel-renonce-aux-mondiaux\/570286?xtref=http:\/\/t.co\/tu3H7IUVOA&amp;\" target=\"_blank\"> L&#8217;Equipe article in French<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Citing health issues, Olympic gold medalist Yannick Agnel of France has elected to withdraw from the 2015 World Championships in Kazan, Russia.
