\nMINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The preliminaries of the synchronized diving events kicked off the 2000 U.S. National Indoor Diving Championships Monday night. The finals of each of the four events, men\u2019s and women\u2019s synchronized 3-meter and platform, will be spread throughout the rest of the meet, running April 17-22 at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis.<\/p>\n
Synchronized diving will make its Olympic debut at the 2000 Games in Sydney. Because each diver must first qualify to the Games in an individual event, the synchro events here do not have bearing on qualification to the U.S. Olympic Team Trials, June 20-25 in Seattle.<\/p>\n
The U.S. Indoor Nationals are, however, the last opportunity to qualify for the Olympic Trials in the individual events. In both men\u2019s and women\u2019s 3-meter springboard and 10-meter platform, the top 12 divers here will earn berths to the Trials.<\/p>\n
Tuesday will feature competition through the semifinals of both women\u2019s 3-meter and men\u2019s platform. Although only the top eight divers will advance to the finals, the top 12 divers at the end of the semifinals will qualify for the Olympic Trials.<\/p>\n
The 2000 U.S. National Diving Team will also be selected from the results at the indoor nationals. The top eight divers on 3-meter and platform events, along with the top four 1-meter divers and top two synchro teams in each event will make the team. In addition, divers are competing for spots on the FINA\/USA Diving Grand Prix, to be held May 11-14 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The top four divers on 3-meter and platform and the top synchro team in each event will represent the U.S. at the biggest international competition before the 2000 Olympics.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
