GRESHAM, Oregon, February 28. MORGON Henderson-Kunz of Westview did something in the Oregon 6A State High School Championships that no other Oregon swimmer could do throughout the three high school championships that took place: he set a state record.<\/p>\n
Following an All-American automatic qualifying time and a first place in the 50 freestyle (21.19), Henderson-Kunz pulled out 45.20 time in the 100 free. Beaverton's Casey Harmon swam the former standard in 1993 with a 45.73 time. Harmon still owns the Oregon state record in the 200 freestyle (1:38.80).<\/p>\n
Brett Nagle of David Douglas posted two All-American automatic qualifying times in his two individual event victories. He crushed the 200 freestyle field by three seconds, registering a 1:41.11 time. Later on in the meet, he edged out the 500 freestyle champion, Connor McCarroll from Jesuit, with a winning time of 51.83. <\/p>\n
McCarroll, however, would end up on top in the end. The Jesuit squad out-performed the field in two of the three relays en route to a decisive team title. The Jesuit 200 medley relay (McCarroll, Sam Conchuratt, Quincy Lee and Mac McDonald) caught Roseburg's relay on the breaststroke leg and never looked back with a winning time of 1:38.39. <\/p>\n
Avenging a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay, the 400 freestyle relay (Joey Bieze, McCarroll, Conchuratt and Garth Summers) pulled out a finish fit for a movie. Jesuit trailed Newberg until the last 50 of the race. Summers outlasted Newberg anchor's Jordan Anderson and brought it home stopping the clock at 3:13.95.<\/p>\n
The women's competition fielded fast swims, but no one swimmer dominated. Three different high schools took gold in each of the three relays, and only one swimmer made repeated trips to the first-place podium. <\/p>\n
Canby senior Morgan Scroggy highlighted the women's side of the meet. Scroggy took individual event victories in both the 200 freestyle (1:50.62) and the 100 freestyle (50.78). <\/p>\n
Westview edged out Tualatin by a 10-point margin (142-132) in the final team scores. David Douglas snuck by Oswego for the third-place honors with 117 points.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
