INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, February 24. SENIOR Tyler Lemert of Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran smashed a 15-year-old state high school breaststroke record Friday night with a prelim swim of 54.82. The old record was 55.33, set by Jeff Daniel of Chesterton in 1992. He finished more than two seconds faster than the next qualifier, Derek Paul of Hamilton Southeastern. Patrick Fowler of Seattle Prep set the national record of 53.66 in 1998. Lemert also posted the second fastest swim in the 50 free.<\/p>\n
Paul's team advanced 10 individual swimmers and all three relay teams to championship heats in Saturday's finals to put themselves in the favorites' role. Indianapolis North Central also sent through three relay teams to go with six individual swims in the finals.<\/p>\n
Three other teams \u2013 Chesterton, Munster and Northridge \u2013 also advanced all their relay teams to finals.<\/p>\n
HSE posted the fastest times in the medley relay and the 400-free relay, while North Central was .08 faster than the Royals in the 200-free relay.<\/p>\n
Ben Wachtel, a Westfield junior, clocked the fastest times in the 100 (46.17) and the 200 (1:40.93)<\/p>\n
Kyle Whitaker, a freshman from Chesterton lived up to his advance notice in going a leading 1:51.18 in the IM.<\/p>\n
Junior Kyle House of East Central led a tight field in the 50 free with a 21.29.<\/p>\n
Sophomore Ed Minturn of North Central put his stamp on the 500 free with a 4:34.69, five seconds better than the next three swimmers.<\/p>\n
Minturn's teammate Mike Christy led the backstroke in 51.84 and is second in the IM.<\/p>\n
Only a half second divides the top five in the butterfly. Patrick Augustyn of Highland was fastest in the prelims in 50.18, with Whitaker fourth.<\/p>\n
Diving prelims are being held Saturday morning. Finals in both swimming and diving get underway at 1 p.m. at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
