THE Cougar women hold a substantial lead in the standings with 327 points, 91 points ahead of Utah with 236 team points at the Mountain West Conference Championships. Wyoming follows at 212, ahead of UNLV (209), Colorado State (171), New Mexico (122), TCU (119), Air Force (78) and San Diego State (63). <\/p>\n
The BYU men also lead the team scoring with 279 points, followed by UNLV (251), Air Force (248), Utah (200.50), Wyoming (199) and TCU (167.50).<\/p>\n
Mountain West Conference Championship records were broken in back-to-back races as Utah senior Amber Walter set a new women's 50 freestyle record of 22.51 just before BYU senior Brett Allen swam a record time of 19.62 in the men's 50 free to highlight day two action at the MWC Swimming and Diving Championships Thursday.<\/p>\n
Walter's time also broke the MWC all-time record which she set with a 22.59 at the Ohio State Invitational earlier this season. The championship record was Walter's second of the day, as she set a previous record with a 22.66 swim in the morning prelims. Walter's time is currently the 12th fastest time in the NCAA this season, automatically qualifying her for the NCAA Championships.<\/p>\n
Allen, who is undefeated in the 50 free this season, also broke his own record of 19.69 from the 2006 conference championship prelims. His 19.62 swim, which is tied for the seventh-fastest in the NCAA this season, also tied his league all-time record from last year's NCAA Championships.<\/p>\n
The Utah women's 200 free relay team of Walter, senior Alison McInturff, freshman Annie Van Leeuwen and sophomore Jennifer Fredsall broke the MWC Championship and all-time record with a 1:31.93 clocking, repeating their title in that event with an NCAA-B qualifying time that is the 18th fastest in the NCAA this season.<\/p>\n
