MAR DEL PLATA, ARGENTINA. Brazil's Rogerio Romero and Venezuela's Oswaldo Quevedo were the top swimmers at the South American Swimming Championships, held April 12-15 in Mar del Plata, Argentina, site of the 1995 Pan American Games.
\n In the absence of teammate Leonardo Costa, Romero, 30, breezed to victories in the 100 and 200 meter backstroke events in world class times of 55.57 and 1:59.77.
\n Quevedo, 24, a student at Auburn University, swam a strong 53.84 to take the 100 meters butterfly and also added the 50 fly (24.30).
\n The meet was missing many of the continent's brightest aquatic stars including Costa, Gustavo Borges and Fernando Scherer of Brazil, and Jose Meolans of Argentina. Venezuela's Francisco Sanchez, a former world champion in the 100 meters freestyle and last year's Pan Am champ in the 100 fly, competed but did not swim up to expectations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
