Rome, Italy – Three players added to the roster of the USA Women's National Team in January, are having a dramatic impact on the team and have emerged as key figures in the quest for the team to qualify for the Sydney Olympic Games.<\/p>\n
Goalkeeper Bernie Orwig (Anaheim, CA) led the University of Southern California to the 1999 National Championship and received the Peter J. Cutino Award as the 1999 Women's Collegiate Water Polo Player of the Year. Orwig will start in goal at the Qualification tournament. <\/p>\n
Ericka Lorenz (San Diego, CA) may be the best all-around athlete on the team. In addition being a two-time CIF (San Diego conference) MVP and three-time All-American in water polo, Lorenz was a three-time, first team
\nCIF softball player and two-time first-team CIF volleyball player. Lorenz,
\nthe team's youngest player, is seeing a lot of playing time and is a
\ncontender for the 11 player Olympic squad.<\/p>\n
Heather Petrie, (Orinda, CA), the captain of Cal's team, made the decision
\nto sit out this year's college season for the chance to make the Olympic Team
\nand the gamble appears to be paying off. Like the other two new additions,
\nPetrie has impressed the coaching staff and has a real shot at making the
\nOlympic squad.<\/p>\n
"Our new additions have just made incredible progress in adapting to the
\ninternational game and have improved our team and our chances to get
\nqualified," says USA Women's Team Head Coach, Guy Baker. <\/p>\n
