LONG BEACH, California, February 21. THE first day of the 2007 Big West Championships was filled with excitement as records were set in three of the day's six events.<\/p>\n
The women's 200 medley relay kicked off the festivities as the team from UC Irvine took the gold in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:42.35, just .22 seconds ahead of the second place squad, UC Santa Barbara. The Anteater men's contingent made it a sweep for UCI as they torched the field in a meet record time of 1:26.85, narrowly missing the NCAA automatic qualifying time of 1:26.52. The record was nearly three seconds faster than the previous mark of 1:29.11 set by the UCI men a year ago.<\/p>\n
The women's 1,000 free was next as Brooke Cashion led a Pacific 1-2-3 finish with her winning time of 10:14.28. Scott Weltz of UC Davis then continued the record-setting evening with his winning time of 9:08.83, topping UC Santa Barbara's Eric Koch's time of 9:13.60 in 2001.<\/p>\n
The final event of the day was the 800 free relay. The Gauchos' women's contingent collected the third record of the day as they finished the relay in an NCAA provisional qualifying 7:18.84, just over two seconds faster than the UCSB women posted a year ago. The Gaucho men wrapped up the evening with the title in the event after topping the field in 6:34.89, another NCAA provisional qualifier.<\/p>\n
On the standings board, the Pacific women have the lead after day one with 119.0 points, while UC Santa Barbara is a close second with 104.0 points. Cal State Northridge is third with 87.0 tallies, with UC Irvine in fourth with 83.0 points. Cal Poly (62.0) and UC Davis (54.0) wrap up the women's side.<\/p>\n
In the men's standings, UC Davis is the leader with 122.0 points, while UC Santa Barbara sits in second with 113.0 points. Pacific is in third with 88.0 points, while Cal State Northridge (75.0) and UC Irvine (74.0) are right behind the Tigers. Cal Poly wraps up the men's standings with 63.0 points.<\/p>\n
