{"id":139158,"date":"2015-06-25T08:03:59","date_gmt":"2015-06-25T15:03:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=139158"},"modified":"2015-06-25T08:18:54","modified_gmt":"2015-06-25T15:18:54","slug":"maria-astashkina-downs-world-junior-record-in-200-breast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/maria-astashkina-downs-world-junior-record-in-200-breast\/","title":{"rendered":"Maria Astashkina Downs World Junior Record in 200 Breast"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Russia&#8217;s <strong>Maria Astashkina<\/strong> took center stage at the European Games with a World Junior Record in the women&#8217;s 200-meter breast.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FINALS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Russia&#8217;s <strong>Maria Astashkina<\/strong> downed the World Junior Record in the women&#8217;s 200-meter breast with a time of 2:23.06. \u00a0That performance lowered the previous mark of 2:23.12 set by <strong>Viktoriya Solnceva<\/strong> at the 2013 World Junior Championships, and pushed Astashkina up to sixth in the world rankings.<\/p>\n<p>That win is Astashkina&#8217;s second of the meet, having already topped the 50 breast with a 31.58 on day one. \u00a0She&#8217;s now set up for a breaststroke sweep.<\/p>\n<p>Italy&#8217;s <strong>Giulia Verona<\/strong> finished second tonight in 2:25.91 with Great Britain&#8217;s <strong>Layla Black<\/strong> earning third in 2:27.61.<\/p>\n<p>Russia&#8217;s <strong>Daniil Pakhomov<\/strong> topped the men&#8217;s 200-meter fly with a time of 1:57.04. That&#8217;s his second individual medal of the meet, having finished third in the 50-meter fly on day one.<\/p>\n<p>Italy&#8217;s <strong>Giacomo Carini<\/strong> hit the wall second in the 200 fly with a time of 1:57.46, while France&#8217;s <strong>Matthias Marsau<\/strong> claimed third in 1:58.96.<\/p>\n<p>Great Britain&#8217;s <strong>Duncan Scott<\/strong> won the men&#8217;s 100-meter free in 49.43 with Italy&#8217;s <strong>Alessandro Miressi<\/strong> taking second in 50.03. \u00a0Russia&#8217;s <strong>Vladislav Kozlov<\/strong> wound up third in 50.11.<\/p>\n<p>Austria&#8217;s <strong>Sebastian Steffan<\/strong> picked up the men&#8217;s 200-meter IM crown in 2:01.39 with Great Britain&#8217;s <strong>Jarvis Parkinson<\/strong> touching second in 2:01.94. \u00a0Great Britain&#8217;s <strong>Martyn Walton<\/strong> closed out the podium with a third-place 2:02.24.<\/p>\n<p>Austria&#8217;s <strong>Caroline Pilhatsch<\/strong> won the women&#8217;s 50-meter back in 28.60 with France&#8217;s <strong>Pauline Mahieu<\/strong> placing just behind with a second-place 28.70. Russia&#8217;s <strong>Mariia Kameneva<\/strong> picked up the bronze in 28.77.<\/p>\n<p>Lithuania&#8217;s <strong>Andrius Sidlauskas<\/strong> claimed the men&#8217;s 50-meter breast title in 27.81. \u00a0Croatia&#8217;s <strong>Nikola Obrovac<\/strong> placed second in 27.89 with Denmark&#8217;s<strong> Tobias Bjerg<\/strong> earning third in 28.04.<\/p>\n<p>Italy&#8217;s <strong>Sveva Schiazzano<\/strong> won the women&#8217;s 1500-meter free in 16:40.17. \u00a0Hungary&#8217;s <strong>Janka Juhasz<\/strong> finished second in 16:40.39 in a close call for first. \u00a0Spain&#8217;s <strong>Marina Castro Atalaya<\/strong> touched third in 16:46.16.<\/p>\n<p>Russia&#8217;s <strong>Aleksandr Prokofev<\/strong>, <strong>Nikolay Snegirev<\/strong>, <strong>Ernest Maksumov<\/strong> and <strong>Elisei Stepanov<\/strong> won the men&#8217;s 800-meter free relay with a time of 7:16.08. Great Britain (7:19.36) and Germany (7:20.77) placed second and third.<\/p>\n<p>Russia&#8217;s <strong>Mariia Kameneva<\/strong>, <strong>Maria Astashkina<\/strong>, <strong>Polina Egorova<\/strong> and <strong>Arina Openysheva<\/strong> clinched the women&#8217;s 400-meter medley relay in a time of 4:03.22. \u00a0The Netherlands (4:07.99) and Great Britain (4:09.10) rounded out the podium.<\/p>\n<p>That gave Astashkina her third gold of the meet, while Openysheva now has four golds and a silver.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SEMIFINALS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lithuania&#8217;s<strong> Andrius Sidlauskas<\/strong> led the way in the men&#8217;s 50-meter breast with a 27.75. Croatia&#8217;s <strong>Nikola Obrovac<\/strong> and Denmark&#8217;s <strong>Tobias Bjerg<\/strong> tied for the second seed with 28.20s.<\/p>\n<p>Austria&#8217;s<strong> Caroline Pilhatsch<\/strong> paced the women&#8217;s 50-meter back in 28.63 with France&#8217;s <strong>Pauline Mahieu<\/strong> turning in a second-seeded 28.74.<\/p>\n<p>Russia&#8217;s <strong>Arina Openysheva<\/strong>, who is taking on an Iron Ladyesque schedule this week with eight potential medals, topped the women&#8217;s 200-meter free qualifying in 1:59.42. \u00a0Sprint star <strong>Marrit Steenbergen<\/strong> of The Netherlands qualified second in 2:01.60.<\/p>\n<p>Great Britain&#8217;s <strong>Luke Greenbank<\/strong> earned the top seed in the men&#8217;s 200-meter back with a time of 1:57.53, vaulting to 13th in the world rankings with his swim. \u00a0Poland&#8217;s <strong>Jakub Daniel Skierka<\/strong> also cleared 2:00 with a second-seeded 1:59.95.<\/p>\n<p>Russia&#8217;s<strong> Polina Egorova<\/strong> cleared 1:00 to top the women&#8217;s 100-meter fly semis with a 59.67. \u00a0Great Britain&#8217;s <strong>Amelia Clynes<\/strong> qualified second in 1:00.09.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"\/results\/2015-european-games-live-results\/international-elite\/2015\/June\/23\" target=\"_blank\">2015 European Games, Live Results &#8211; Results<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Russia&#8217;s Maria Astashkina took center stage at the European Games with a World Junior Record in the women&#8217;s 200-meter breast.
