{"id":138893,"date":"2015-06-23T18:09:01","date_gmt":"2015-06-24T01:09:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=138893"},"modified":"2015-06-24T14:42:52","modified_gmt":"2015-06-24T21:42:52","slug":"ellie-monobe-named-assistant-coach-at-unlv","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ellie-monobe-named-assistant-coach-at-unlv\/","title":{"rendered":"Ellie Monobe Named Assistant Coach at UNLV"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;\"><strong>Ellie Monobe<\/strong>, a member of two NCAA Championship teams at California, has joined the UNLV men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s swimming and diving staff as an assistant coach, Interim Head Coach <strong>Bobby Folan<\/strong> announced <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_1194849243\"><span class=\"aQJ\">on Tuesday<\/span><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;\">&#8220;We are very excited to have Ellie join our program,&#8221; said Folan. &#8220;Her experience as a coach and swimmer will help take our teams into the next level as we move into the 2015-16 season.&#8221;<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;\">Monobe comes to the Rebel swim program after spending last season as an assistant coach with the UMass women&#8217;s team, which finished second in the Atlantic-10 in the 2014-15 season. Her focus was on the breaststroke and IM groups while she held several other responsibilities with the program, including assisting with running practices, recruiting and coordinating dryland training for the athletes.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;\">&#8220;I&#8217;m very grateful for this opportunity and I am looking forward to being a part of the Rebel family,&#8221; said Monobe. &#8220;During this transition year, I can&#8217;t wait to be a part of the tradition and success of UNLV swimming, while I&#8217;m also excited about moving back west.&#8221;<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;\">A native of the Golden State, Monobe was a four-year letterwinner at the University of California and a member of two NCAA championship teams for the Golden Bears. She swam in the breast and IM events for Cal, and was team captain her senior season in 2010-11 during their second championship run while she was on the squad. Monobe graduated from the school in December 2011 with a bachelor&#8217;s degree in American studies.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;\">Following Cal, Monobe spent two seasons working with the San Jose State athletic department while pursuing her master&#8217;s degree in sport management, which she received in May 2014. During both years, Monobe was a graduate manager for the women&#8217;s swimming and diving team that claimed the 2013 WAC title. She also served as compliance assistant during the 2013-14 academic year.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;\">While at SJSU, Monobe was hired as co-head coach for the Sun Valley Swim Team in Lafayette, Calif., for the 2013-14 season.
