﻿{"id":138771,"date":"2015-06-23T08:33:41","date_gmt":"2015-06-23T15:33:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=138771"},"modified":"2015-06-23T08:33:41","modified_gmt":"2015-06-23T15:33:41","slug":"marrit-steenbergen-with-swim-of-night-to-open-european-games","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/marrit-steenbergen-with-swim-of-night-to-open-european-games\/","title":{"rendered":"Marrit Steenbergen With Swim of Night To Open European Games"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Netherlands&#8217; <strong>Marrit Steenbergen<\/strong> jumped to 11th in the world in the women&#8217;s 100-meter free semis for the swim of the night at the European Games.<\/p>\n<p>Steenbergen\u00a0clocked a time of 53.97 to lead the women&#8217;s 100-meter free semis. \u00a0That swim tied the 53.97 set by <strong>Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace<\/strong> at the Monte Carlo stop of the Mare Nostrum.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FINALS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Great Britain&#8217;s <strong>Abbie Wood<\/strong> won the first gold medal on offer with a 4:41.97 in the women&#8217;s 400-meter IM. \u00a0Italy&#8217;s <strong>Ilaria Cusinato<\/strong> hit the wall second for silver in 4:44.01, while Serbia&#8217;s<strong> Anja Crevar<\/strong> claimed third-place honors with a 4:45.84.<\/p>\n<p>Germany&#8217;s <strong>Paul Hentschel<\/strong> topped the men&#8217;s 400-meter finale with a time of 3:52.43 as he emerged from a packed finish for the win.<\/p>\n<p>Greece&#8217;s <strong>Dimitrios Dimitriou<\/strong> just missed the top of the podium with a silver-winning time of 3:52.57, while Russia&#8217;s <strong>Ernest Maksumov<\/strong> snared bronze with a 3:52.65 in what proved to be an incredibly close finish across the board.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine&#8217;s <strong>Andrii Khloptsov<\/strong> turned in a 23.92 to win the men&#8217;s 50-meter fly after clocking a semifinal time of 23.90. \u00a0Poland&#8217;s <strong>Pawel Sendyk<\/strong> took silver in a time of 23.97 with Russia&#8217;s <strong>Daniil Pakhomov<\/strong> placing third in 24.02.<\/p>\n<p>Russia&#8217;s <strong>Maria Astashkina<\/strong> captured the women&#8217;s 50-meter breast crown in 31.58 with Germany&#8217;s <strong>Laura Kelsch<\/strong> placing second in 31.87. \u00a0France&#8217;s <strong>Nolwenn Herve<\/strong> picked up third overall in 32.08.<\/p>\n<p>Great Britain&#8217;s <strong>Holly Hibbott<\/strong> took home the women&#8217;s 800-meter free title with a time of 8:39.02. \u00a0Russia&#8217;s <strong>Anastasiia Kirpichnikova<\/strong> finished just behind with a silver-winning time of 8:39.73. \u00a0Spain&#8217;s <strong>Marina Castro Atalaya<\/strong> claimed bronze in 8:45.51.<\/p>\n<p>Great Britain&#8217;s <strong>Duncan Scott, Martyn Walton, Daniel Speers<\/strong> and <strong>Cameron Kurle<\/strong> won the men&#8217;s 400-meter free relay in 3:19.39. \u00a0Italy (3:20.19) and Russia (3:20.22) placed second and third.<\/p>\n<p>Russia&#8217;s <strong>Arina Openysheva, Vasilissa Buinaia, Olesia Cherniatina<\/strong> and <strong>Mariia Kameneva<\/strong> clinched the women&#8217;s 400-meter free relay in 3:43.63. Netherlands (3:44.10) and Great Britain (3:45.80) closed out the podium.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SEMIFINALS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Russia&#8217;s <strong>Maria Astashkina<\/strong> led the way in the women&#8217;s 50-meter breast semis with a time of 31.47. Germany&#8217;s <strong>Laura Kelsch<\/strong> qualified second in 31.94, while Turkey&#8217;s<strong> Gulsen Beste Samanci<\/strong> also cleared 32 with a third-seeded 31.98.<\/p>\n<p>The men&#8217;s 50-meter fly semis featured a trio of 23s. \u00a0Ukraine&#8217;s <strong>Andrii Khloptsov<\/strong> led the way with a 23.90, while Croatia&#8217;s <strong>Bruno Blaskovic<\/strong> touched in 23.94. \u00a0Poland&#8217;s <strong>Michal Chudy<\/strong> also beat 24 seconds with a 23.98.<\/p>\n<p>Russia&#8217;s <strong>Anton Chupkov<\/strong> smoked the men&#8217;s 200-meter breast semis with a top time of 2:10.69. \u00a0He&#8217;s just a second outside of the top 10 in the world held by <strong>Kazuki Kohinata<\/strong> with a 2:09.51.
