The majority of people look at those who have overcome impossible odds, accomplished the unthinkable, or dared to do the extravagant, and they think, \u201cHow do they do it?\u201d<\/p>\n

How do they do the millions of things they do every day, and never get tired? How do they keep other people\u2019s opinions from affecting them, when those voices seem more logical than their own? How do these people continue to keep pushing, even when all hope is lost? How do they do it<\/em>?<\/p>\n

You\u2019re asking the wrong question. It\u2019s not how<\/em> they do it; it\u2019s why<\/em> they do it. Most people get caught up in the menial details of a dream, trying to plan out every step of the journey before they simply take the first step.<\/p>\n

If your \u201cwhy\u201d is stronger than your \u201chow,\u201d then you will make a way where there isn\u2019t one.<\/strong> If your \u201cwhy\u201d is motivating enough, your \u201chow\u201d will come naturally. The impossible will become your normal, and others will start to look at you, shake their heads, and say, \u201cHow does he do it?\u201d<\/p>\n

A Man with a Dream<\/h2>\n

Mike Koleber<\/a>,<\/strong>\u00a0the founder of Nitro Swimming, takes every breath with purpose. Fourteen years ago he drew his vision of a team on a napkin. His wife, Tracy, looked at him and said, \u201cHow are you going to do it?\u201d<\/p>\n

He said, \u201cI don\u2019t know. But I know why.\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u201cwhy\u201d was simple: he wanted freedom.<\/p>\n

\u201cFreedom to run a program the way we wanted to run it,\u201d he says. He got tired of \u201cfollowing other people\u2019s rules,\u201d being bound by leasing agreements, and other people controlling the water.<\/p>\n

So Mike Koleber set out to own the water. Specifically, he set out to build the second Olympic-sized indoor pool in the greater Austin area.<\/p>\n

The task was no small feat for him or his family. While their children quickly adapted to the aquatic lifestyle, Tracy Koleber<\/strong> assumed responsibility for the \u201cdry side\u201d of Nitro. In other words, while Mike handled everything \u201cwet,\u201d she administrated the entire business side of Nitro.<\/p>\n

Leaders must lead by example, and if Nitro Swimming is about being \u201call in,\u201d the Koleber family models that perfectly.<\/p>\n

The Meteoric Rise<\/h2>\n

Between the napkin sketch of the vision in 2001 and the doors opening in June of 2007, \u201cblood, sweat, and tears\u201d built the Nitro Swimming pool.<\/p>\n

Koleber smiles as he reminisces about the journey.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf it was easy, everyone would do it. \u00a0It isn\u2019t easy. \u00a0But I wouldn\u2019t trade it for the world.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

When Koleber created Nitro, he had one thing in mind: No one gets lost. \u00a0To achieve this goal, Koleber had to hire a coaching staff that \u201creally, truly cares.\u201d<\/p>\n

His mindset was, \u201cIf we expect our kids to outwork, to out-train and to out-swim everyone else, why don\u2019t we hold ourselves to the same standards?\u201d He decided he would only hire coaches who were willing to buy in and to give 100 percent to developing swimmers as athletes and people.<\/p>\n

The results are compelling. Like the explosive for which the team is named, Nitro has exploded onto the state and national scene only eight years after the club officially began. Not only is Nitro now a USA Swimming Top 5 club team, but they also have won the Texas Age Group Swimming State Championships seven times.<\/p>\n

The National Scene<\/h2>\n

One of the coaches who takes \u201coutcoaching\u201d others seriously is the coach of the National Group, Tim O\u2019Brien<\/a><\/strong>. After coaching at the University of Georgia and at Swim Atlanta, O\u2019Brien spearheaded the explosion of Nitro onto the national scene.<\/p>\n

At the national level, Nitro now boasts six Junior National Champions and six National Junior Team members, in addition to their growing base of Olympic Trials qualifiers.<\/p>\n

Sean Grieshop<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0recently broke National Age Group records in the 500 and 1650 freestyle, while his teammate and training partner, Taylor Abbott<\/a><\/strong>, is an Open Water World Champion. Additionally, Tate Jackson<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0sprinted his way onto the National Junior Team this year in the 50 free.<\/p>\n

On the girls\u2019 side, Reagan Barney<\/strong>\u00a0is currently one of the fastest 15-16 women in the country in the 400 IM, while Karling Hemstreet\u00a0<\/strong>has represented Nitro internationally at Canadian Nationals.<\/p>\n

Nitro alums William Licon<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and Matt Ellis<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0are now NCAA champions, and with the Olympics quickly approaching, many swimmers championing the Nitro \u201cN\u201d have a shot at making it to Rio.<\/p>\n

The “Why”<\/h2>\n

So how has this club become such a formidable power in the sport of swimming?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

It all goes back to the \u201cwhy\u201d of Nitro Swimming, as opposed to the \u201chow.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n

Nitro has now built a second pool in the Bee Cave area, and \u201cowning the water\u201d no longer provides the motivation for its rapid expansion. Nitro\u2019s heartbeat comes from knowing that swimming is what swimmers do, but it is not who they are<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe biggest compliment we can get from another coach is \u2018Man, Nitro swimmers are nice.\u2019 The second biggest compliment is, \u2018Man, they know how to race.\u2019 I don\u2019t ever want that to be reversed,\u201d Koleber explains.<\/p>\n

\u201cPerson. Athlete. Swimmer. In that order,\u201d says Koleber.<\/p>\n

Many things can be accomplished with nice swimmers on a pool deck, serving each other and looking out for one another as teammates. Once a team has great people, Koleber says, swimming teaches them work ethic, delayed gratification, and a myriad of other life lessons.<\/p>\n

Then the great swimmers emerge.<\/p>\n

Never Stop Improving<\/h2>\n

Someone once asked Koleber when he realized his team was a success.<\/p>\n

He responded simply, \u201cI don\u2019t see it as a success, because we never stop improving.\u201d<\/p>\n

Koleber claims the team always has room for improvement, and his ultimate goal is for Nitro to become the best team in the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know, we fall every day. But we fall forward, and then we get back up again. You can\u2019t be afraid of making mistakes. \u00a0Take a chance. \u00a0Take a risk.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a sport as unforgiving as swimming, there is no room for complacency.<\/p>\n

\u201cNever quit thinking, \u2018What could be better?\u2019\u201d \u00a0Koleber declares. \u00a0\u201cWe are not going to rest, and we are never going to stop improving.\u201d<\/p>\n

For those who have witnessed Nitro\u2019s rise in this sport, there is no doubt their climb will continue.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe wanted to be in charge of our own destiny and to write our own rules,\u201d Koleber says.<\/p>\n

It appears Nitro Swimming has done exactly that.<\/p>\n
